I installed a free MPEG-2 codec from http://www.dvd-wizards.com/vcdhelp/ and it successfully allowed me to play MPEG-2 files in Windows Media Player 7. But in my efforts to make SVCD’s play at the correct aspect ratio I installed the Elecard MPEG-2 player 1.35. That works OK except I would prefer not to have the logo top right. Then I found out that I could play SVCD’s correctly in Windows Media Player 6.4 bundled with all later versions because the “full screen” function resizes the picture. So I deleted the Elecard player and it’s codecs, but now Windows Media Player cannot find any MPEG-2 codecs, even though I’ve re-installed the one that was working originally. So it must think that the Elecard codec is still there. How do I get things back to how they were before the Elecard player was installed?

Download Graphedit from this site and run it. Go to "Graph>Insert Filters" At this point, a dialog box that shows all registered filters in the system will come up. The Elecard filters should be under the "DirectShow Filters" category. Although you cannot register and unregister filters from Graphedit, go to the Elecard filter or any other miscreant or otherwise offensive filters and expand them out. It will show you where the filter is located on your drive. Once you have located the filter, go to a command prompt, change directories to the location of the filter, and type "regsvr32 /u" followed by the name of the filter (usually *.ax).
If you need to reregister a filter at any time, type the same command without the /u. The elecard filters nuked my previously installed Ravisent MPEG-2 filters too, but unregistering them and reregistering the Ravisents solved the problem!
