do you trust Moscow State University?

http://www.compression.ru/index_en.htm

example:
Sixth MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 Video Codecs Comparison (2010)
http://www.compression.ru/video/codec_comparison/h264_2010/

result of best h.264 codec: x264

This time, yes, sure I trust. x264 is winner for this ssim-based test.

result of best h.264 codec: mainconcept & x264
Well, the overall MSU's conclusion is that x264 is best H.264 codec.

kinda fair review.
digitize comparison:
rate x264: 0 to 10.
9.5?
so doom9 should develop h.264 directshow decoder based on x264.

x264 is not a decoder. If you want an encoder based on it, it already exists.

how x264 decodes h.264 streams?

The lavf and ffms input modules both use ffmpeg, like most things.

SSIM itself cannot be fully trusted as human eyes works in a different way. Anyway it can be a good starting point in evaluating an encoder.

Probably, but only for the tested encoders. There are other encoders too that personally I would like to see in that comparison but I know they're a bit pricey so probably quite difficult to test.

Yes, any metric has its limitation. And if developers exagerate too much with optimization for some particular metrics then numbers don't correlate with visual quality enough well.
First release of VP8 was example of that. Pure PSNR mess.
SSIM is much better than PSNR but AFAIK there are better metrics around.

Which one come into your mind?

For me it's at least one. Ateme. AFAIK its last encoder isn't available anywhere.

Just so that you know, I went ahead and cleaned up this thread. Rasicm will not be tolerated, period.

yes i 100% agree with you, this comparison is incomplete.
they should test any h.264 encoder. (like vanguard software solutions, hdx4, lead tech, apple, etc)
