View Full Version : How do I convert mpeg4 to svcd?

I tried converting to asf with vidtoasf but it says I don't have the codec installed, not telling me what codec it's looking for. I was thinking if I can convert to asf, virtualdub would be able to read it. Not sure if this is true though....

I was surprised to get no response here to this question. More and more posts are in this format and the usual methods of re-rendering don't work with mpeg4. Anyone? :D

mpeg-4 as in? divx? I have a guide on that

well I guess it's divx but it's a different strain of divx. Normally to convert divx to vcd the first step is to load the file into virtualdub or tmpgenc but neither is able to read mpeg4 divx's...?

Please understand that MPEG-4 is an ISO Standard and when you're working with MS files these are propritory and really don't work in the standards world. If you want to create a compliant MPEG-4 file you will need an encoder that supports the ISO and ISMA Standard. Look to Envivio or Philips for compliant encoders. On the input side, because MPEG-4 is based on the QuickTime wraper you will need to supply a QT compliant file as the source. .avi .mov .raw, etc...
An uncompressed version is the best and will allow you to produce extreamly high quality at bit rates under 1Mbps.

But I'm asking how do I decode an avi that has been encoded as mpeg4? Will the encoders you mentioned also decode so the file can be re-rendered as vcd?

Sorry, I misunderstood you intention. I don't know of any decoders to take MP4 to anything else (currently).

wrong forum, wrong thread, and not enough info.. I can check my 4 servers all day long and I have zip (meaning zero for those who are not familiar with the expression... you never know.. ) problems which means.. the problem is either your box or your ISP or both.

sorry it's just that that's what came up when I started to look for the avic file on your site. Maybe it's the network connection here at work. Could you give the link to the file? Otherwise I will try to find it from home tonite.

if you have a non http1.1 capable proxy you're screwed on some of the servers.. but the same applies for this forum as it also uses gzip compression.. really.. all the random reports I get.. they're just bogus.. can't be that you can access the forum but not the server.. they deliver the same kind of gzip compressed html pages.. server admin once had the same prob... pressing f5 fixed the problem.. I wonder how many people know about the reload function in a browser.. I keep checking all 4 servers in regular intervals and I never had any problems

ok this is totally weird. When I click on your link I get the following:
"Leeching detected!
You came here following a link that originated outside the Doom9 domain. We do not allow external linking to our downloads because that means we have to pay for the traffic other sites create which is inheritently unfair.
Please visit Doom9.org and you can download all the files you want."
Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean....
Also on your main software page under avi editing tools, avic is not listed. Clicking on other files right from this page, the same message as above comes up.

what forum url do you use? forum.doom9.org? that's the one you should use.. rilanparty or the 208.... IP url will be blocked on the servers that have a referer check.. and right clicking and save as or download managers won't work either

I use forum.doom9.org both at work and home, ie 6 at home, I think ie 5.5 at work and hitting the F5 key didn't help yesterday. Now today everything is normal. Something must be up if you get sporadic reports similar to this from time to time.
Anyway does the FourCC code of MP42 tell you anything useful about these mpeg4's?

yeah.. it means morello encoded the clip;) you need a codec package that contains the microsoft mpeg-4 v2 codec.. that's the pre-divx codec.. I think undercut (www.undercut.org) has it in his codec package.

Well I downloaded and installed the mpeg-4 video codec pack from Undercut, and Virtualdub now can open the mpeg4 files. Unfortunately they are encoded at 14.983 frames per second so I think I am still out of luck in trying to convert to svcd. I need 23.976 or 29.97 for my dvd player to work and every time before when I changed video frame rates I could never get the audio in sync. Thanks for the help though and any tips on the audio sync problem would be appreciated also :D
