Can anyone explain this,1.0.6 b1: Vertical limit R1, bitrate default 4pass.
Result two svcd's that have no blocks in and just look like the dvd.Great I thought
Finally PERFECTION!!
Then yesterday,1.0.6.b3:The Grinch R2, same settings but the picture was terrible.
How can two films be so different? The second was not so long so in my mind should have been better.
Is it because NTSC gets put to a frame size of 480,480 so it's just that bit smaller.
Or is just the content of the film, when I did Vertical limit I thought it was going to be bad at such
a small bitrate and with a lot of action in the movie.

Just to let you know the resize was not on simple.:(

I think this may be a case of apples and oranges (no pun intended).

As I recall, Vertical Limit is a movie with lots of bright scenes. The Grinch, overall, is dark. IMO, CCE has a terrible time with dark movies.

Also, with PAL at 480x576 and a slightly higher framerate (25 vs 23.97), it will be somewhat harder to get the same level of quality. And since the determining factor is, to a large extent, the maximum bitrate, you may never get to the same level of quality.

Oops! Sorry. I'm not a moderator - I shouldn't have posted.

Moved to the newbie forum.

If you just ask the moderators for help you will hardly ever get a reply. There are about 4 or 5 of us in this forum. Compare that to the number of very smart members and we are dwarfed.

Every movie encodes differently and maybe there where slight differences that made a big change.
What were your bitrate settings?
What was actually used in CCE?
Were the movies 4:3 or 16:9?
Pal does require more effort and a higher basic bitrate, because there is more info there. The more frames and the higher resolution suck bits more than a lower resolution NTSC video will.

More info is definately needed.
