maybe a stupid queation from a complete beginner

Could anyone please tell me, if I need a dvd-player on my pc in order to make a backup copy of my dvd's with "dvd2svd". When I place the dvd in either the cd-rom drive or the "cd-burner drive", I am asked to insert a cd. So - do I need a dvd-player in my pc to make the copies?

in order for your computer to be able to read the dvd, you must have a hardware dvd drive. there is no flexibility here.
