I posted this in the newbies area, but it was suggested by another member that I post it here to try to get some help.

I am new to ripping and burning Blu-ray, but I am not a novice computer user. I was hoping those who are experienced with Blu-ray burning might be able to help me figure out what to try next.

I got a new computer with an SSD drive and Windows 7 64 bit last week. It has a Blu-ray burner (PLDS BD-RE DH-8B2SHATA).

I just got my first set of BD-R discs (Maxell 4X BD-R - which apparently are Ritek discs according to Imgbun). I am trying to reauthor a movie I own so I don't have to wade through all those previews and menus to watch my movie.

I used anyDVDHD to rip the movie to my hard drive, used BD-RB to do a "movie only" compression (selecting UDF 2.50), and then used imgburn to burn the resulting BDMV and CERTIFICATE files to the disc.

The movie plays beautifully in my computer, but I cannot get the disc to be recognized by either my OPPO BDP-83 nor my Sony BDP-S350.I ti

I tried it the first time by using imgburn after BD-RB and then I tried a second time letting BD-RB automatically start the burn with imgburn. Same results, my 2 blu ray players will not play the discs.

I tried slowing the burn speed to 1X and got the same result.

By the way, I have burned Maxell DVD+R discs by compressing Blu-rays to DVD5 (blu-ray format) with no problems.

I then tried burning a disc using Nero 10 and I have yet another coaster. All firmware is up to date on my BR players.

So, I bought some Verbatim BD-R discs and a BD-RE disc to see if it might be the media.

I started with the Verbatim BD-RE to test my settings with. I burned the same files on the same settings to that disc and it plays perfectly. I had the burn speed set at max (Imgburn) and when I checked the logs, Imgburn said it had burned the disc at 2X.

Convinced I had the settings correct, I then tried the Verbatim BD-R discs with the same settings. Unfortunately, that disc will not play in my blu-ray players. I had the burn speed set at MAX (AWS) in Imgburn and the disc burned at 4X (the Verbatim BD-R discs are rated at 4X).

I am at a loss to understand what is wrong. The only thing I can think to try is a new burner.

If someone has a better idea as to what to try next, I'd love to know. Your help is much appreciated.

Here is the BD-Rebuilder log in case it might be helpful.

So it works with BD-RE, but it doesn't work with 2 different brands of BD-R?

It appears you eliminated the output of BD-RB as a problem (BD-RE works). You've also eliminated the burning software (you used both ImgBurn and Nero). You've eliminated the media (two different brands of BD-R). You've also eliminated the structure as an issue (because it works on BD-RE).

It seems to me that just leaves the drive.

Thanks for responding. I suspected as much. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some setting I was missing that a newbie to burning BR might not think of.

I have discovered that my "PLDS" drive is actually a Lite-On drive. My computer is new (I've had it 2 weeks), so I called Dell to see if they'd let me exchange the drive. I explained the issue and their tech support people told me that no home BR player will ever play a BD-R disc due to copyright issues and therefore, they will not exchange the drive.

I have ordered and LG drive from newegg.

By the way, I found a guy who had the exact same issue in the dvdfab forums and he had a Lite-On drive. He bought an LG and it resolved the problem.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Oh yeah, and THANK YOU for such a great piece of software in BD-Rebuilder!

What incredible bullsh*t. God, I hate help desks... sometimes I think they put these Level I people on the desk without 10 minutes of training.

I wonder if they have ever heard of HD home video? The cameras and discs are everywhere. A quick trip to SAM's Club or Target might give them the background they need to do their job.

Ughhh....

I told him that I have a camera that shoots 1080P video and I want to make BR movies with that content (which, btw, is absolutely true.) He said that's not possible with any home BR player and that such discs can only be viewed on the computer. What a joke tech support is.

I really hate to have to call such folks because I always know more about this stuff than they do. But, sometimes I have to call them to get them to replace a part.

In any case, you've confirmed my suspicions. I'll install my new LG burner when it arrives later this week and report back.

Thanks again.

I can only remember a positive experience with a help desk twice in my life -- and both times it was with Netflix.

Maybe you should fax him the page from your standalone player that says "supports: BD-R, BD-RE", etc.. -- they all do (or at least all the ones I've seen).

Well you can add two more to that list...
DVD-RB and BD-RB!! :D :)

For me, when available, if I try to buy something I may question compatibility with my setup, I want a good return policy. Then test as fast as I can! :p
If not satisfied or lacks compatibility, I return it. But I realize this is not always an option. :(

Hmmm... here's a page from my Sony S360's manual. What? It supports BD-R? But that's impossible! Dell's Level I help desk technician with 8 mins experience could never be wrong?

I think their response of "it works in your computer, so it's burning the discs just fine" is what they use to deny any exchange under warranty.

I think I'll just move on and call it a learning experience. I learned that I should have just built my computer instead of buying one.

I honestly think they hire morons for tech support because then it is so aggravating to work with them that people don't call again.

Yeah... that's about all you can do. I had a similar experience with some people at Virgin Mobile once... I might as well have been talking to a stump.

It's probably your drive -- but even that isn't the case, you'd hope the support folks would know just a little something about their job. Their answer was just plain wrong. I'm sure it was said with sufficient technical authority, though. :)

I think they are smarter than you give them credit for. This response is to get you to feel just as you do, and to give up! It is part of their method.
I agree with you that this one is probably a losing battle, and better to just move on. Live and learn. :p
But try to keep having fun!! :)

I thought I'd report back here to wrap this up.

I got my new LG drive today (WH10LS30). Burned a BD-R and it plays flawlessly in my BR players.

I also hacked the firmware in the drive with MediaCodeSpeedEdit to remove the dang Riplock in the drive and was able to apply RPC2 Auto Reset.

I'm very happy. The drive was on sale for under $80 this week.

So this thread has a happy ending. Thanks for all your help and advice and THANK YOU jdobbs for BR-RB! (I'm off to donate now.)

That's for the update. Good to hear -- you should send the other one back to Dell and tell them politely to file it neatly where the sun don't shine.

I've thought about doing just that!

But, I am going to keep it for ripping and playing. It also seems to burn DVD disc fine. It can take some of the wear and tear off the new drive.

Thanks again.
