I've been downloading some of the old transformers episode and other movies encoded with divx. Now I wish to convert these avi's and burn them onto a VCD...how do I even begin???

My friend said to use flaskmpg and convert them to mpg...then use nero to burn VCDs. I'm not sure if this is the best method...thats why I'm asking you guys for some expert advice.

What are the programs I need to convert AVI to VCD, and what are some of the major steps involved?

My system spec are pretty shitty (I know its gonna take a few days to convert.....sigh):

-P2 300MHz
-192Mb ram
-40Gb IBM Deskstar
-Win98SE

PS: just in case you're planning to burn me with "READ the F**king guide on this website you retard newb"... I've already read it. The point of this post is to get some more opinions from different ppl.

Thanks for bothering to read this post. Any reply is welcome and much appreciated.:)

i have been using tmpg and it has worked well for me nearly all the time (well...until now...and im going to be posting my problem later). But give tmpg a try, and if you like the results then stick with it. I havent heard of using flask...but i think i might give it a try if you can convert with it.

the way described in the avi>vcd guide will probably be your best bet. its a good method and u have a detailed guide to work from

Thanks alot for your opinions guys!

OK, I need help one more time....
I've done all the steps up to the last two (use bbMPEG and burning the VCD)...my problem now is the encoded mpg file is too big (809Mb).

The guide's instructions were very vague about the last step:

"bbMPEG will help you join the video and audio files and split the output over a number of CDs."

My question is: Do I use bbMPEG to encode again, and set the maximum size to 700mb (I plan to burn the movie onto a 700Mb 80min CDR)?
Or will the program automatically recognize the size of the file and split the output file up for me?

What are the step-by-step instructions for bbMPEG???

Thanks

open it. click on start encoding.settings.go to input and output strema, select an output file name. select your video stream then audio stream.go to program stream settings and select vcd.go to general settings and select your max size as 790 (thats a 80min cd). Then click ok, then start.

Sounds good. Thanks for the advice.

Damn it! I used bbMPEG to encode the file to .m1v format, but it crashed halfway! Is there any way I can resume the encoding again???
I really don't want to wait another 15hrs for it to encode over again...

Btw, what do I do with the .m1v and .mp2 file? Do I just use nero to burn them as VCD?

i dont understand. You would have demultiplexed the file to m1v and mp2...bbmpeg makes a mpg. It shouldnt have overwritten your m1v and mp2...

uh...ok...now I'm confused...
Please bear with me, I'm a complete newbie to this stuff.

The guide said:
"Once TMPG is done encoding you'll either have an mpg file or a m1v (VCD, with NTSC to PAL conversion) or m2v (SVCD, with NTSC to PAL conversion) file. If you have an mpg file go to the TMPG MPEG Tools (File -> MPEG Tools) and load your mpg file then press Run."

I got a mpg file and followed the latter instructions...which produced a smaller (slightly, about 300k) .mpg file.

So then am I suppose to use bbMPEG to convert it to something else? Or just burn the mpg using Nero? I tried using Nero, but it says the encoding is not right for VCD and ask if I wanted to re-encode?...

argh...I wish the guide was more detailed about the last few instructions....

Thanks for your help twistee

ok...first problem. Once you get your mpg file, you use mpg tools (in TMPGenc) to demultiplex it (so you get the m1v and mp2 files). Then you use bbmpg to split it.

Did you use the templates for TMPGenc? If you still have your original file, just go to TMPGenc-->Mpeg Tools-->Simple De-Multiplex. Put your mpg in, and press run. This will give you m1v and mp2 files. Open bbmpeg and follow the instructions i said above. That should work...hopefully

ok, thanks for clearing that up.
I'll try it out overnight and see if it works.
Again, thank you very much for helping me out so many times. I really appreciate it. :D

Good news...everything went perfectly and I tried out the VCD in my friends DVD player in his car...works like a charm.

Thanks for all the help and advice, twistee and UHT, or else I would still be sitting here not knowing what to do.
