View Full Version : Giving up ! ?

Ok, I thought I would give Gknot a chance because of the great things I heard about it. It looks like the perfect package with everything I need in one neat place.
I have read the guide (not at all helpful) I have "Lurked" in the forum like the rules say. I carefully read the help part of the product tab. Nothing explains how to rip the DVD and create the divx file from start to finish.
I can run the first part with smartripper. I understand the DVD2AVI part. A couple of times it auto went into virtualdub. I have ended up with a file that I can view but no sound. I tried using other sound tools but it was a disaster.
Anyone know of any guide that would take a beginner like me step by step from start to finish to create a divx from a DVD?
I use another product now (no names..playing by the "rules) but it takes forever to make.
Gknot looks like it could be a very fast way of creating the divx end of the DVD process. I just have no idea where to go after the beginning of this package.
I must say that this is the first forumn I have been on where people are so touchy so I try not to say or post anything incorrect. I am just trying to learn this stuff but cannot find complete doc. Any help would be appreciated:) :)

if you want an answer to a question then you will really need to ask a more specific question, described exactly what you have done / are doing and ill try and help u from there
doom9's guides are IMHO excellent and have taught me much of what i know

Uhmm...yeah please post a specific question and we can try and help you;) I read your post but it's hard to follow to see what your complaining about.
Doom9 has provided excellent guides IMO and continues to update them when possible. You must heep in mind that the software were using to rip and encode is changing almost on a daily basis. This makes it very hard to keep a guide up to date.

Ok, I installed GK, then I did the upgrade to .23.
I start GK. I run smartripper as it states. I then follow the help and do the DVD2AVI. twice, after that process completed, I checked and it had auto gone into virtualdub. So I let the virtualdub process go until it did not show up any longer.
What do I do from there? It looked like I could bring up the movie but no sound was present. I don't know where (within GK) to go from that point. Or, for that matter, if that sounds like it is the right sequence that should happen.
I tried running nandub on it's own but that not only didn't give me any correct sound, it made a file that was 1 or 2 GB big. I only want about a 690MB file when finished.
Also, the guides that you are talking about...are there other guides then the ones I find from the link from the homepage of doom9.org?
because I downloaded all of them associated with GK and all the programs within GK. I must be missing something because it did not explain what to do or how to set it up. The only think GK doc said was to install it completely and upgrade to .23?? am I in the wrong spot? maybe there is a link I am missing....
Thanks,
Jeff

Do you have Gknot set to encode and mux the audio? Or do you have Gknot set to do nothing in the audio tab? Sounds like your almost there since you have the video.:)

I found 2 audio setting boxes. I set both of them to 128kbs. The first time I did not have them selected. However, when I processed them, the resulting movie had the sound all garbled.

You should have only selected Audio1 tab. Hit the select button and point to your AC3 file. You don't need to do anything in the audio2 tab unless your tryingto add 2 different audio streams(multilanguage).
Right now you might want to use HeadAC3he or BeSweet to encode your audio(AC3) to MP3 and then use NanDub to mux it. This way you dont have to go through the entire video encoding again;) For your next movie follow the directions above though.

What should I set the Interleaving & AVI-Overhead to?

Numerous threads on this very subject exist. Here a few values that people here are using
64/64ms
96/96ms
500/1 frame
500/2 frames
500/5 frames
Don't foget to enter your delay value as well. Otherwise your audio will be out of sync.

I think I am looking in the wrong spot.
The place I see is under bitrate.
it gives you the option of
no audio
1x ac3
1x vbr-mp3
2x ac3
2x vbr-mp3
mp3 + ac3
it gives frames then kb then mb then interval = 42ms one under another.
I don't see where I would enter those values you gave.
Also, how do I determine the delay value? is it calculated someplace?
I also have input resolution set to NTSC and input pixal aspect ratio to 1:1 Crop disable

Judging by your questions you have apparently been reading the wrong Gknot guide on Doom9s site. The guide provides screenshots and descriptions to what your asking. Please follow it step by step-
http://www.doom9.org/gknot-divx4.htm

Thank you for that....
That looks like exactly what I needed. I don't know where you found it. I clicked on guides on doom9.org home page and came up with a 1 page guide with only 1 graphic and that was for subtitles.
This looks to be exactly what I was talking about in the first post of this thread.
I will read it over and get on it.
Thanks,

In doom9's guides, all of the links are highlighted in brown. you just missed following the gknot guide link from the divx4 introductions.

the software for download given on guide http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main.htm doesnot work. I searched on the net and got one. It's an EXE file that got struck on dos window on WinXP. 2)The guide is not too easy to follow. After Rip and dvd2avi it becomes little unclear.

Please be more specific in what software download doesn't work. I just tried all the sw links and they download fine for me. Perhaps it's a problem on your end?

No, with the amazing amount of help from jggimi, I have very clear instructions on how to use the product and am getting better at it.
I still have work to go on the sound portion though. I just did one last night and, when I tried to play it, it said it had a different codec then the others.?? anyway, I just need to play around with sound settings and selections. I have already made 1 movie that looks and sounds perfect using GK.
the original links for the doc were not correct and I ended up with a useless piece of paper. but the links he provides above gave me perfect instructions.

the gordian knot installer package and update .23 both doesnot seems to work. I tried other downloads from other site and some from this site. The problem seems to be on GK0.21b and 0.23update.

@starfarer
Like I said...it must be a problem on your end somehow. I just now downloaded both packages for the second time today. Arghh...just realized Doom9 is trying to conserve bandwith and dumba$$ me is checking the DL links:(
