Is there any tool that will let me take a DVR-MS HD file with dolby 5.1 and just edit a clip (a song) with out converting to another format. I want to edit songs from a concert and play back with WMC7. WLMM 2010 works but with no dolby 5.1 and very low volume. WLMM 2011 wants to encode the file first (19Gb too long) Any advice or free software suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Is it possible to go back tp WLMM 2010?

as part of the 'Fun With DVR-MS' article, there is DVR-Edit

i have some cartoons that i've recorded and want to edit. they started out as wtv files but when i right click i see a "convert to dvr-ms" option which i chose. so now, how do i remove the commercials from these shows and then how can i get them into a format that megui will recognize so i can turn these into mp4?

1. MeGui should be able to handle dvr.ms files when using ffms2 as source filter iirc.
2. if it's not dvr-ms hd one could use mencoder (to extract the raw video and audio streams) and cuttermaran (or similiar tools to cut the files and remux it to mpg).

For manual editing I use DVR-MS Editor which is from an old MSDN article by Stephen Toub.

Are you talking about his EditDvrmsMetadata.exe code sample? I found that, but it appears to only edit metadata, no way to extract or strip out portions of the video ... or was there another tool on his page which does this that I missed?

That's the right article, but the wrong tool. In the final section before the conclusion (about 2/3 down the page) he discusses editing DVR-MS files, and included in the attached download is the tool that he describes.

is it easier to edit .wtv files then? that's how my files start but when i right clicked there was an option to convert to dvr-ms so i figured that was an easier method but maybe not

The files have to be converted to dvr-ms before you can edit them.

WTV files don't play nice.
