View Full Version : Re-encoding DVD-9 to fit DVD-R with subtitles

Recently I've been encoding DVD-9s(130min movies) to fit DVD-Rs all with success using SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, VFAPI, CCE (Robshot's tweaked multipass VBR), & DVD Maestro. I've been looking thru the guides on Doom9 but haven't seen how to rip subtitles from DVDs and import them into Maestro. Can someone list the steps I should follow to do this??
Thanx!!

Clarify for me.
Do you mean the subs that are text or are you looking to get the menu subs?

The text subtitles, is what I'm talking about. What settings do you use to rip the subtitles out of a VOB and insert them into Maestro?? I've read other forum posts on this subject but none of them explained the exact settings.

I was hoping you wouldn't say the text subs because I found there to complicated for me to mess with.
I guess I should have known you weren't talking about the menu's that's easy.
Sorry can't help there.

here is what you do. Use subrip http://www.subrip.fr.st/
rip the desired subtitle stream to text file (actually subrip format)using OCR, the webpage explains how to do that. Then use the subrip to meastro program that you can get on the same page. (note: this program creates errors that take some fixing, it seems it crashes after about 500 lines of text. so you have to split the sub file into 500 line pieces...got it?). you can then import the subs into meastro easy! i have found that most of the time, your ripped subs will end up out of sync, you can use subrip to fix this, just read the documents. good luck to you. and also.... look out for "shaolin Soccer Remix" a homemade DVD with new subs!!!!!!

Hi,
If you want to keep original subtitles with your own DVD, why don't you try this methods:
1. Save subtitles pictures as BMP (using Subrip).
2. Save the output scripts as Sonic DVD creator (Menu Output Format/Set Output Format).
3. All you have to do is to convert Sonic script to .son script that Maestro undertands. This job can be done easily if you know some programming skills. (I have my own one written in VB)
I usually use these methods with success.
Hope this helps

Cool, I'll try this too. I tried the OCR method but that didn't work because I'm working with 2-bit fonts (Japanese fonts) in the sub-titles and the OCR function thinks that each font is actually 2 letters instead of 1 Japanese letter.

How do you convert the .txt file (Sonic DVD creator output text file) created by SubRip to a *.son that Maestro understands.... I don't know jack about programing so maybe you can help me out on this.
Thanx!!

I just got home and tested it out. I first ripped the entire DVD to my HD, then I started up SubRip 0.97b and loaded the *.ifo & *.vob files. Under Actions in SubRip I selected "Save SUB pictures as BMP" and on Options I put a check on "+TC & Res." Then I hit the Start button and I can see all the BMPs of the subtiles. After all the BMP files were on my HD, I went into Set Output Format and selected Sonic DVD Creator (*.txt) with NTSC 30fps and DropFrame 29.97. I converted the file into the Sonic DVD Creator (*.txt) format and started your program. I loaded the *.txt and converted it to *.son. I imported this *.son into Maestro but it gave me a Warning saying "No Corresponding Subtitles Found! The asset timecode may not correspond to the timecode specified for the subtitles in the import file." What did I do wrong??? All the corresponding *.bmp files are in the same folder and have the same names as the *.son file lists them. Here is the sample of the Sonic DVD Creator *.txt file from SubRip:
0001 00:01:03:21 00:01:06:09 glad000001.bmp
0002 00:01:06:12 00:01:09:24 glad000002.bmp
0003 00:01:10:02 00:01:13:01 glad000003.bmp
0004 00:01:13:04 00:01:16:17 glad000004.bmp
0005 00:01:16:20 00:01:20:13 glad000005.bmp
This is the sample from the *.son file that your program created:
st_format 2
Display_Start non_forced
TV_Type NTSC
Tape_Type NON_DROP
Pixel_Area (0 477)
Directory
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
Contrast (15 15 15 0)
Color (0 1 2 0)
SP_NUMBER START END FILE_NAME
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0001 00:01:03:21 00:01:06:09 glad000001.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0002 00:01:06:12 00:01:09:24 glad000002.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0003 00:01:10:02 00:01:13:01 glad000003.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0004 00:01:13:04 00:01:16:17 glad000004.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0005 00:01:16:20 00:01:20:13 glad000005.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
All the *.bmp files are in the same folder as the *.son & *.txt file. What do you think is wrong??? Plz help.

I think you should drag your video and audio assets first into DVDMaestro and then subtitle scripts.
Hope this helps

I did load the video & audio assets first. I even had menu's and chapters and the movie timeline was complete. Then I tried loading in the *.son file but I got that error....
Thanx!
