Hi.
Are there any media recorders (consumer price level) capable of recording from TV/satellite straight to H.264? All recorders I found would record to MPEG-2 only. :-(
Thank you.

Assuming that you are talking about digital transmissions, the typical container for such transmissions is "ts". This is formally the MPEG 2 transport stream container, BUT this does not mean that the video/audio/text streams inside the container are MPEG 2. They can equally well be H.264/AC-3 or whatever.
It is actually much easier to record a stream than to display it as there is no need for decoding the stream (which requires computing power). I cannot tell you what to buy as I have no idea which continent you are on, but it is quite possible that even a cheapo recorder can save a ts stream.

Many thanks for your help, thegeby.
You are right. I didn't think of that ... the best solution quality-wise is obviously to preserve the format of the source signal and NOT to transcode.

Can you give me one or two examples of such devices? I don't think you should worry about continents, most electronic devices are available worldwide. I live in Europe, but assuming that you live somewhere in US/UK/AUS just point me to an internet site in your country, it wouldn't matter to me.
Just to have an idea, because I have never seen such a device, although I searched. All I could find so far is recording devices that save to MPEG video only.
Many :thanks:

Any tuner which receives H.264 and has a hard drive can record in H.264. I have never seen one which transcodes on the fly to Mpeg2 because it would take up too much space.
There are DVB-T2 and DVB-S/DVB-S2 receivers that can do what you want. Humax make some and so do many others. Search google for DVB-T2 Recorder|PVR or DVB-S|DVB-S2 Recorder|PVR -PC -Card
