View Full Version : 40% and 640x272 or 65% and 512x224?

I'm doing a Scarface DVD-rip. Since the movie is not that well compressable, I went for 2 CDs. But still I have only 40% @ 640 resolution. Now my question: When I have values below 60% (what doom9 says to be the lower limit for good rips), should I lower my resolution in any case to get at least 60%? Wouldn't I lose some details when I do that? I think 512x272 is a rather low resolution. What do you think?

For increase the % in compressibility test you can change the resize filters too. Go for a smooth bicubic or bilinear. And if it doesn't change anything low the resolution.
I think 60% is really the lower % of compressibility test, I use to reach 85-90 for the best quality.
But the quality depends on the viewer so try different solutions and compare...:D

If I remember well, Scarface has very bad noice - both spacial and temporal ... try some filtering ;)

This one requires the "triple" filter pack -
SmartSmoother(5,35)
TempSmoother(3)
Smartsmoother(3,35)
Eats a up a lot of CPU power but it does remove lots of the noise
Oh yeah if you don't know how to use VDub filters usig Avisynth ask the guys in the AviSynth forum or just use the VFAPI frameserve method

Since I never really worked with filters, I'm just curious how you get these odd values like SmartSmoother(5,35) or 3,35. The second parameter is the radius, isn't it? And why don't you use a second parameter with tempsmoother like gknot does? And very important to me: What resolution did you use?
TIA.

There are wierd numbers because these are Virtual Dub filters and NOT Avisynth filters
SmartSmoother(3,35) means a radius (or is it diameter) of 3 and a strength of 35
Temporal smoother only has one variable because, as i've said previously these are Virtual Dub filters and as a result the temp smoother only has a setting for strength.
Unless you know how to use avisynth with VDub (ask the avisynth lot or even do a search...) then just use the VFAPI frameserving method. You can still use Gknot with this though you won't be able to select the radius of the tempsmoother and use neutral bicubic resizing.
I think i used 592 x ... rez

Hi-You can use the Temporal Smoother and then serve the .avs into Nandub, and then put in one of the Nandub filters as an alternative to the VFAPI route. That's a pretty strong combination of filters, FXOverlord. Must have taken a helluva long time to encode. I might recommend using 2D Cleaner in place of Smart Smoother-it does the same thing and is about 2.5 times faster.
Smart Smoother works with Diameter, and 2D Cleaner works with Radius.

is that the actual name of the filter: 2cd filter? where can i get it?

Hi-You can get the 2D Cleaner filter here (http://sauron.mordor.net/dgraft/) . Then click on "Hosted". There are 2 versions within the same download, one for Athlons, and the other for P3-P4 machines (your CPU must support MMX Extensions).

note it's not "2cd" it's "2D" as in Two Dimensional
