I always assumed that was a given for this last generation of DVD players (mine dates from 2004).
I've looked up Philips Sony and LG but none of the DVD boxes I found plays back mpeg4 audio.

I'm not prepared to invest in a Blu-Ray player as of yet.
Can anyone suggest a make/model of DVD-with-aac support ?

thanks

I would think that anything that says "Nero Digital Certified" should work. Don't have a list of those, I'm afraid.

Or DivxHD certified, or anything that generally supports MP4 or MKV. Google has a search mask that limits the results to stuff you can buy.
Example: http://www.google.com/products?q=%22divx+hd%22
The top result is 50$.

Are you concerned with a player's ability to just play AAC audio standalone, like how almost every DVD player has for several years now?

Alternatively, do you want to be able to play (for example) and MP4 containing H.264 or MPEG-4 ASP along with AAC audio?

There are certainly units out there that can do the latter. Therefore it seems only logical that the former should exist as well! Then again, I've never seen an example of one.

Also - I moved this post over to hardware players, since it's not a question regarding audio encoding per se.\

So hardware player OR disc (DVD) as a storage?

hint PS3 and i think all h.264 capable players are aac compatible to - so maybe not DVD but something like popcorn, wd media player, bd etc

Yes : like you, I assumed that recent DVD players "did" AAC audio (standalone, not mixed w/video).
When I started actually looking for one, I found none.

Best example, look at this extract from Philips DVP3580 manual (one of their most recent DVD products on EU market) :

Play MP3/WMA music
MP3/WMA is a type of highly compressed audio fi le
(fi les with .mp3, .wma extensions).
1 Insert a disc or USB that contains the MP3/
WMA music.
• For USB, press .
» A contents menu is displayed.

Audio
• Analog stereo output
• Signal to noise ratio (1 kHz): > 100 dB
(A-weighted)
• Dynamic Range (1 kHz): > 90 dB (A-weighted)
• Crosstalk (1 kHz): > 100 dB
• Distortion/noise: (1 kHz): > 85 dB
• MPEG MP3: MPEG Audio L3
• Scart output
• Digital output
• Coaxial
• HDMI output

anyohw, thanks to one & all for your answers
cheers
