I want to convert my mkv files to wmv so I can easily stream them anywhere using Windows Media Player. I don't want to lose the 5.1 audio though. Can anyone suggest an encoder for this?

It looks like it streams .avi files just as easily, so can someone recommend a good encoder for mkv to avi (with ac3 for 5.1)? I'm new to this, but my understanding is that the audio has to be ac3 for 5.1.

Why spend hours converting when you can spend minutes finding a better streamer?!?

The Matroska Multimedia Container (MKV) is an open standard free container format. It the best format for DVD video. You can Google search by phrase 'mkv to avi' and you will get a lot of available converters for that.

WMV is a proprietary format, this alone is a reason to avoid it.

For "acceptable" results, I recommend Nic's WM Encoder
(it's a GUI for the Microsoft DLLs, and requires .AVS files as input).

Does that mean the Xbox only accepts video streamed by Windows Media Player???

If for some reason you have to use WMP and if for some reason it can't play/stream mkv files then depending on the type of video the MKV files contain you may be able to extract the audio and video from them and store them in AVIs or a file type WMP likes without having to actually convert anything.

A conversion program with a "direct stream copy function" which comes to mind is "Super Video Converter". It's free and you'll find it easily with Google.

Maybe this tool helps?
AFAIK, it was created specifically for encoding files for Xbox360 and PS3.

I didn't try it myself though.
