Help with DVD43?

A friend of mine recently bought a netbook and external DVD drive, but did not receive DVD playback software. He asked me for advice, so I recommended he install DVD43 to allow Windows Media Player to play the DVD's. However, he could not get it to work, so he asked me for help. Having never actually used it myself, I decided I should run an install in a virtual machine and become somewhat familiar with it before attempting to assist him. However, after installing it in a virtual machine, I also could not get it to work. When inserting a DVD, the tray icon remains yellow, at it appears that it does not detect the presence of a DVD. How can I fix this. The DVD I am using is Avatar, but I have tried several with the same result. I am running Windows XP in my virtual machine.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!

Ask a mod to move this to the decrypting section. You may get an answer there.

DVD43 won't work with a lot of recent discs and I'm pretty sure it won't work with 'Avatar'.

Try DVDFab Passkey which is free at the moment while it's still in beta.

Try using it natively under Windows.

Hi!

Are you and your friend using original, commercial DVDs for (attempted) playback?

If so, try uninstalling DVD43 - and see if Microsoft Window Media Player is capable of playing the DVD without any additional software installed.

If that doesn't work, you should be able to play your DVDs with VLC...

You don't mention the operating system of your friend's laptop - if it is Windows 7 64 bit you are out of luck with DVD43. It's OK on Windows 7 32 bit systems. A bit more info on your friends laptop would assist.

It appears the problem was trying to test this in a virtual machine. I fired up an old machine to test this without the risk of mucking up either of my setups, and I was able to rip (but not play) the DVD with DVD43, and I was successfully able to play the DVD with VLC Media Player.

I will instruct my friend to install VLC Media Player.

To answer another question, his OS is Windows XP. Windows 7 is required for native playback of DVD's in Windows Media Player.

BTW - I believe you'll find that Microsoft Windows Media Player under Vista will also playback DVDs - and v.9 and up may also play under XP (SP3)...

Hmm, it seems that some discs will work in WMP 11 on XP, but it chokes with others. I've never used Vista to play DVD's, but I would imagine it would be the same because its the same version of WMP. The only version of WMP I've had good luck with is WMP 12, which is only available on Windows 7.

On a side note, after telling my friend to install VLC Media Player, he told me that he gave up and returned the external drive. Figures.
