View Full Version : demuxing for StaxRip, AC3 audio sync issues
yanksno1

I'm trying to convert my ts captures (from my HD-PVR) to xvid format using StaxRip. To demux the audio, I'm using tsMuxerGui and it works great for the most part, but if there's a skip or flicker in the program it throws off the audio sync (using AC3 to convert to MP3). Any suggestions?

So your goal is to convert from TS/AVC/AC3 to AVI/XviD/MP3.
If you open the TS directly without demuxing default handling would be DirectShowSource handling for both audio and video, why not use this?
yanksno1

Yup, that's the goal. So what options should I have checked so DirectShowSource handles both the audio and video in StaxRip? Right now if I just set my options (croping, resizing, aspect ratio) and leave everything else as the default the audio doesn't come through. If I go to Options > Audio > Use AviSynth script as audio source and have that checked I get an VirtualDub Error that says "The fucntion SetMode was called on a stream[?] that hasn't been previously installed with SetSource" when I click Next. I'm sure I'm missing something, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

TS/AVC should be decoded with DirectShowSource by default, both audio and video. I don't know what's wrong, I might find out when I see the log file. After you have opened the source file you can show the log file at Tools > Show File > Log File.

Here's the log, hope it helps. I mis-spoke when I said I don't get audio, I do get audio but it's not the actual audio I should be getting. It sounds like a record playing backwards, in super slow mo and it's not correct at all. So there's definitely something happening there, not sure what.

The audio conversion is wrong:
Audio input:
Format : AC-3
Duration : 2mn 27s
Bit rate : 384 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Audio output:
Format : MPEG Audio Version 1 Layer 3
Duration : 7mn 1s
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Maybe you have like input a mixed ac3 (2.0 for initial commercials and 5.1 for movie)

I received your sample and it don't cause the problem here, decoder is ffdshow too but encoder is eac3to here. Default handling should be eac3to encoding, did you configure StaxRip to use BeSweet instead of eac3to?
edit:
Sorry but I didn't notice you were using MP3 as target format.

The wave file you get is 70 MB and mine is 20 MB, DirectShowSource uses ffdshow on both our systems so the problem must be you have an old ffdshow version (I have 1.1.3476.0 as displayed by GraphStudio) or different ffdshow settings, ffdshow uses liba52 here for AC3, I don't remember if I have changed the default (I don't know what the default is).

My ffdshow version is 1.1.3516 so I'm not sure if it's that or not. What's strange is when I select a file for the Source it doesn't even give me an option for the .wav file. It shows the audio source as .TS and the .wav file isn't in the temp folder. If I click Next to do the job it then will give me the .wav file in the temp folder. If I click to do the job again this time with the .wav file as the audio source, it sounds the same as the first job with the audio all distorted and such. The .wav file is around 77MB so I'm not sure why your's is around 20MB. I'm sending you a screenshot of how I have my profile set up and the end result for you to hear the sound.

I think I'm obviously missing something in my setup since the .wav file is produced after I click the Next button but isn't joined with the finished .avi is created. I'm attaching a screenshot for you guys to look at to see how I have my profile set up. If I use an external demuxer to create a AC3 file and replace it in the Audio section where I have it set to MP3 it works fine, but isn't matched up since it's created by an external program. Any thoughts?

The problem is with the wav file which is generated with DirectShowSource, ffdshow, VirtualDubMod. The current StaxRip version does not write MediaInfo for this wav file to the log file so please post it. Do you know how to configure ffdshow to use another decoding library for AC3 how to disable AC3 decoding so another filter would be used assuming another one is registered.

Thanks for the reply. Glad it at least looks like I'm not missing anything. Not sure how to configure ffdshow for AC3 to use a different decoding filter (if there was a guide or directions given to me I could follow along). Here's the .wav file log:

The wav I get has 2 channels, yours is 6, what is your configuration at ffdshow audio decoder configuration > Mixer, is it enabled? What is used for Output speaker configuration? If you open the ts file with GraphStudio, are there other audio filters besides ffdshow Audio Decoder and Default DirectSound Device? If you play the wav file with a DirectShow player and a non DirectShow player does it play normal?

The Mixer is enabled. My speaker setup is 5.1 which is why I'm guessing it's showing up as 6 channels. Should I set it at 2.0 stereo or leave it as 6 channels in ffdshow (please keep in mind I'd like to have the option to convert HD 5.1 programs to mkv as well)? When I open up the TS file in GraphStudio, just Audio Decoder and Default DirectSound Device are the only things that are there. I'm not sure what's a DirectShow player and what isn't (I tried googling), so would you mind listing a couple? I tried playing the wav file in WMP and it did play fine however.
stax76

The speaker setup is causing the different behavior I guess, if you don't have surround speakers you should change your config. Audio decoder was ffdshow in GraphStudio right? Good DirectShow players are MPC-HC and PotPlayer, both by default use internal filters so missing or wrong external filters won't cause problems. Good non DirectShow players are VLC and SMPlayer, they are based on popular media libraries originated on Linux, countless applications are based on these libraries.

OK, made some progress. Close, but still not 100% perfect.
First I do have a 5.1 speaker setup, so I'd like to keep that if I can. Plus I do plan to convert some TS HD 5.1 to mkv in the future, so I'd prefer not to lose that capability (not sure if I would or not).
Tried the old 6 channel wav file in PotPlayer and VLC and it played fine in both.
Changing it from 6 channel to 2 channel Stereo in ffdshow worked. However, just like the demuxer the audio was thrown off after the skip and didn't match up the rest of the way. Any thoughts?

I've tried to change my speaker setup to 5.1 but still cannot reproduce it. What I've changed is adding down mixing to AviSynth where it makes sense, please try if it works now, if not please post the log file.

Did you try changing in the Audio decoder configuration in ffdshow to 3/2/1 6 channels? That's where it was for me changing it to 2 stereo audio seemed to do the trick. I changed it back though and used your new file which seemed to work on Windows.
However when I copied it over to my old Creative Zen Vision: M player the audio seemed off (the audio came through like 50% of it but sounded like a record player skipping again or something, not as the same before however). What was weird though it worked fine in Windows.
Also, that skip still seemed to be there (and throw off the audio just like with the demuxer) so I'm not sure if there's anything you can do for that or if I have to find them and cut them out. Any idea's for that?
I'm giving you the log of a good file I'd like to have the same properties for the one I'm trying to produce and the file I'm getting (obviously the only difference in being file size cut in half since it's half in length).

OK, here you go (http://www.filedropper.com/staxrip_2). In that file I placed the original TS file, the .xvid file I created with your build and the log. If you'd like the a copy of the good file I'm trying to create my file with the same properties, let me know.

I noticed the sync problem caused by DirectShow handling. I tried tsremux but it didn't help, I also tried DGDecNV and that was able to keep it synced, TS-Doctor might also be able to correct it but it's more expensive. I have no idea about the issue with the mobile device.

So if you set it to DGDecNV will that work (stop the sync problems) and be free for everyone? The strange thing about my mobile player was it worked fine if I used the other program to demux it and used the AC3 when creating the file (so some problem in DirectShow perhaps?). I posted the MediaInfo log of the good file I'm trying to have the same properties for, but if you'd like the file I can give that to you too if you'd like to look further into it (which I'd definitely appreciate).

So if you set it to DGDecNV will that work (stop the sync problems) and be free for everyone?
It worked for your sample, it costs 15$ and requires a Nvidia card.

Maybe you need a certain sampling rate and rate mode, that was different in the MediaInfo you posted and StaxRip has options for this in the audio settings dialog, you might try to change this options.

Ah, yea I don't have a Nvidia card so looks like I'll have to try TS-Doctor (I don't mind paying for it if it works right). Would you mind testing the clip out with it or telling me how to do it? I take it tsMuxer (that's the program I used externally to create the AC3 file) wouldn't work and there aren't any other options?
I'll try changing those 2 options and see if that works. One more question (if you don't mind) I haven't seen anywhere in the profile to make a target output file size (I did see what size to make a split though). So like for each file I produce I want it to be 175MB? I'm sure I'm just missing it but I've looked through the options and didn't see it.

I've never used TS-Doctor, I don't think tsmuxer can correct the delay, with your sample DGAVCDec works too, it was reported to crash with DVB captures however so don't expect too much. To use a fixed target size there are 2-pass profiles.

I guess I might have to try DGAVCDec and see if it crashes since I don't have a Nvidia card for DGDecNV. What about ffms2?
I've tried looking in the options, but don't see anywhere to change the Bit rate mode, Sampling rate or set the 2-pass profiles (for a set file size). Can you tell me where to look?
