I ripped Kiss of the Dragon no problem with SmartRipper... I beleive the issue may be the disc. (not positive tho)

i ripped it again with DVDDecrypter and it worked. my question is now: why is kiss of the dragon so big. itz only 98 mins. when i tried to take just the main movie with one sound file nothing else, it was still too big. around 4.71 gb. i don't think it has angles.
can someone help me with this.

most likely it was encoded at a HIGH bit rate
i've had movies like the goonies , only 90 minutes long but checked avg bitrate on it and it was over 7200 kbit/sec, the first thing i thought was how in the hell was an old movie like the goonies have a drasticly higher bitrate than movies like The Matrix and LOTR
which no matter what i ripped from it (as it only had 2 audio streams) still needed re-incoding to fit on 1 dvd-r

Because the cleaner the source material the easier it is to compress cleanly, and consequently wouldn't need as high a bitrate.
But also the age of the film has nothing to do with it, it would be the material itself that matters, eg a movie with lots of fast action and high detail such as The Matrix would require a higher bitrate to avoid artifacts than something like The Sixth Sense which features lots of static shots without much movement.
But if the source material features grain and other artifacts then a higher bitrate would generally be needed to prevent the encode from looking even worse.

I've tried smartripper, vstrip, dvddecrypter and a couple others and it still doesn't make it past 43% (3rd vob).

You should try the DVD-drive of a friend or a different speed for the drive, if it can be switched with programs like cd-bremse or nero cdspeed.

:) Just a tip, if you have problems ripping a movie, try to first "unlock" the VOB's or tracks of the movie by quickly skipping through the chapters using a player such as PowerDVD or some other MPEG2 player. Once the movie is played through the drive you'll be ripping from...you'll see the ripping program of your choice will rip with no problems.:D
