Would I be naive to suppose that you could author a dual compatibility AVC-HD + DVD disk, i.e. with both PRIVATE and VIDEO_TS at the root, playable on either of the two types of devices?

BD requires UDF2.50+ and BDMV/CERTIFICATE
DVD requires UDF1.02 and AUDIO_TS/VIDEO_TS
AVCHD needs AFAIK FAT32 for SD and UDF2.50+ for DVDR.
So a DVDR containing the needed folders within the required FSs could in theory be played in any device. But I don't know any burning software allowing you to mix 3 different FSs or 2 different UDF versions. maybe the image (ISO) processing software can do this.
But it's not worth, unless the material is short. Besides, DVD material is read by virtually all HDTV players.

In case you're curious, I couldn't get it to work. When you pop it in, apparently it (in my case, the PS3) only recognizes the disk as DVD-Video. However, since the file system is UDF 2.5, it's completely unplayable.
Either way, I gave up on the idea. Didn't find it worthy of embarking on an experiment that would make me a house full of coasters.:p
Peace.
