A comparison between VP8 and x264

From the comparison:

I was really surprised to notice that VP8 at 2 MBps (2k) performs better than x264, and for both measures (both PSNR and SSIM).

Your VP8 encode overshot the bitrate by 30 % (2614 kbps instead of 2000), so that's not really surprising.

I'd like bigger sample images and switching between encoders while keeping the image at the same position. See this for an example: http://mirror05.x264.nl/Dark/website/compare.html

The comparison would also be more interesting if you included slow, high-quality x264 settings. HandBrake's High Profile preset is still pretty fast, comparable to the medium preset in x264 CLI.
