128 MB and a PIII and only 12.1 GB HD.

That's basically the problem, try to install 128 MB more memory at least with 256 MB better.

Hi all,

I'm fairly newbie to all this so fogive my ignorance on the subject.

I started using DVD2SVCD last night for the first time (following the Doom9 guide! :)). I checked up on the progress this afternoon to find the CCE section was coming to an end after 8hrs or so.

Great! I thought. Then once the process had completed it went on to CCE saving file. I thought ok, this won't take too long, but it said it was going to take 52 HOURS to complete!!

Am i reading this right or what? Surely it can't take 52 Hours to save a file???? I got fed up and canceled the saving section. All the files in the \Movie folder are there, can i move them to something preferably quicker? Or have i been doing something wrong?

Many thanks for any help. :)

Wow that sure is some time to go!

But back to your problem, what OS you're using with dvd2svcd and what file system? Give some information about your computer and your harddisk(s) - did you ever defragmented them because this can be one reason for this. Also if you are using one big partition for the OS, your programs and for the encoding process and there is only little space left on your drive then Windows (especially 9x/ME) become extremely instable and behave like this (because of extreme swapping and so on).

So provide some info.

Greetings,

Also, your processor isn't really fast for the encoding process. What is your CCE RT speed with it? (Read the Newbie FAQ and the Q+A for this if not done yet)

And second, are you sure that the CCE process was really finished, or was it just the creation of the *.vaf file (video information file) that's used when doing a multi pass encode.

So please report back on this and have a look at the FAQ first.

Greetings,
gerti67

Uups! - Something strange going on here as this post should have been the fifth one, same with JulCat's post - it should have been the fourth posting - Strange!

Hi there, thanks for the reply. :)

System Specs are as follows:

P3 500mhz
128mb RAM
Windows 2000

I have just formatted the HDD about 2 days ago so it's totally clean, the DVD files were one of the first things to sit on the HDD (i only have a 12.1GB HD :().

A long time ago i used to make DivX movies using Flask and that took way less time than this. :(

Thanks for any help. :)

Hi,

only to give you an overview for the timeframe to compile a dvd:

<time of video> * <nr of passes + 2> * (1 / <realtime speed of pc>)

I think that your speed is about 0,166 and you have a video with
2h length and perhaps a nr of passes (initial count of 3)
so 2h * 5 * 6 = 60h

....

I think you will doubble the speed with 128MB more RAM

Thanks for the info Scotty, but the movie i am trying to encode is only 45mins long. Thats why i'm so confused about this whole 52hr thing.

As we speak i am running the DVD2SVCD outputted DVD2AVI file through GKnot (i'm only encoding the video as the audio is already completed and resting on the harddrive as a *.wav) and it is already at 23% (at this time)!

I think i must have done something wrong somewhere, but i made sure last night that i followed the DVD2SVCD doom 9 guide to a T. Hmm...

I'll see how this turns out as a DivX and maybe encode to SVCD when i can afford more RAM.

I just don't understand why on earth it would take over 2 days to save a 45min movie. I mean, i could understand if it was Titanic or something. :(

You could try to use "One Pass VBR" or even "CBR" with dvd2svcd so you will only have one pass of encode and that should be finished within about the 8 hours (with lower quality then doing a multi pass encode) you mentioned before. So give it a try and report your CCE Speed (You will find it within the litle CCE Window that shows the encoding progress).

And with your little space left on your HD you should uncheck the "Don't delete any files" option in the "Misc." tab of dvd2svcd so you can save some space for the Windows Swapfile that Win2k sure uses in your case with that little memory installed. (But you will loose the crash recovery option with that in dvd2svcd)

Check and make sure you dont have temporalSmoother on. You can find that under the Framerserver tab in DVD2svcd.

First of all don't downsample the audio. This costs a lot of time that is not required. Next thing is a 500 mhz machine with 128 megs of ram is going to take forever anyway. It is not really suited to this task.

As was mentioned, and since you said your video is 45 mins, try one pass cbr mode with no downsampling of audio. This will be the best speed/lowest time you can hope for.

BTW, I am not dissing your machine. I am just saying it will give you a low fraction realtime speed. I would guess your RT is about .39 or there abouts?

Oh, make sure and get the new Build mentioned in the sticky at the top of this forum. Make sure to choose the SimpleResize filter in the framegrabber tab and make sure the Temporal smoother is not on. Later you might experiment using temporal smoother (2,1)to help increase the quality of the one pass modes, but for now don't.

Multipass modes on your machine are going to be problematic due to the large amount of times it will take. Look at it this way...great excuse to upgrade! ;)

Going to put all that advice to the test and try it out. I just found out something else though, the movie is wierd as it mixes between English & Japanese (with subtitles on those scenes). Obviously i'll have to rip the subtitles, but i'm not really sure what i'm looking for now.

Is there a certain subtitle track to look for? As i don't want to rip some and find i have english subtitles applied to the whole movie! Lol.

If anyone's interested, the movie i am ripping is an anime called Blood : The Last Vampire...
