View Full Version : Fixing opening credits text - curious

I'm in the process of cleaning up Jan Svankmajer's Alice for backup (from http://firstrunfeatures.com/alicedvd.html)

This isn't particularly pressing, I'm merely curious. How would you fix this video?

Also, what, in its production, might cause the appearance of the text (not sure what to properly call it - the highlights smearing to the right)?

chubbyrain2() works ok - it's mean for rainbows. I'm not sure what the underlying mechanism is for rainbows, but I'm sure someone here knows

another approach is tweak(sat=0)

if this is only for the title section, you can apply the filter to that section only

EDIT: sorry, I was looking at the rainbow discoloration, not the white smearing... I'm not sure what that is or what causes it. You could fix it in after effects, for example. Not sure how to do it in avisynth

Thanks for the reply. I'll use your tweak suggestion for the credits until I get them sorted properly.

I'll look at chubbyrain2 for the rainbowing throughout the film, which is plentiful . I've tried lots for it but some just can't be eliminated, it seems... didn't know of chubbyrain2 tho.

I'll probably end up buying another copy from a different studio (moskwood media versus first run features), but I'd still like to learn to deal with this. If anyone is interested, I can upload a difficult rainbowing scene.

This kind of smearing is typical of a frequency response problem in analogue video, I guess that this was originally an analogue telecine transfer.
Not a lot you can do really. If all the credits are white on black you can use tweak to remove the chroma (sat=0) and increase the contrast and/or reduce brightness to hide the smear, not very satisfactory though...

laserdisc source maybe?

telecines don't do that unless something is severely wrong with them. the colour would be completely out of wack if that were the case because it would mean a vital part of the processing chain were gone.
