Well,

I have had this problem in the past and now it seems to have come back to haunt me again.

I have installed DivX 4.12. I have been able to encode several movies with VirtualDub without any issues but now have come up with a strange error on the first pass...

"Unable to start video compression error: bad format (-2)"

I did uninstall DivX 4.12 and reinstall thinking that might be the issue but it appears that it is possibly virtualdub.

I greatly appreciate any suggestions.. thanks..

maybe the height of your video is not dividable by 2

Well,

When I upgraded to DivX 5.0.1 it actually has a new information box in virtualdub that sais that the height has to be divisible by 4.

Ever since I started making sure it was, then I haven't had any trouble.

I am not sure but I guess that could have been the problem with the other issues I was having as well.

Im using the divx 5.0 codec and im trying to encode Snl's 25th anniversary(DVD). Its interlaced NTSC 4:3 29.970 fps. I didn't enable force film. Im encodeing it @ 2cd's with .28 pixels per frame and fast deinterlacing.

When trying to encode in virtual dub i get the error..

"Unable to start video compression error: bad format (-2)"

I got the same error yesterday with both divxenc and virtual dub but after trying out a different version of divxenc it started to encode. I then went back to virtualdub to see if it worked and it did. The movie ended up encoding but it sorted messed up towards the end where there were no more keyframes within the last hour. Im trying to re-encode it again and now im getting the error. Ive never gotten it before. No matter what the bitrate mode i get the error, which leads me to believe its a problem with the avs.

Here it is

Another question that i have is that since the dvd is just the footage from the 25th anniversary, the picture takes up the whole screen and there are no black bars(i forget the term). Do you have to use a filter in vdub in order for it to be widescreened or is there some other way to do it?

I just tried it using full processing mode and i got an "invalid log file" error, which makes no sense because it was 1st pass and there was no previous log file. About a minute ago i tried version 1.01 of "comptest" and it started encoding.

Anyone know why this is?

@iamsparticuz:

As you can see on my site, near to every Tool Version there is the DivX Version and the VirtualDub Version to use.
DivX 5.0 and DivX 5.0.1 have different internal data format.
Useing a wrong combination cause the error you well know.
1 - Use the "restore codec's default" function in the codec configuration.
2 - Use the Correct DivX Version if you want to use one of my tools.
3 - STOP POSTING THIS PROBLEM... it is not the first time i answer to this question.
4 - Use the search function and read the threads... you have posted in this thread:

The answer IS in the thread!!!

Beave:

I use your Program quite a lot. I reinstalled Win XP today and updated to DivX5.01. Now I have the Error Message:

Cannot start video compression:
The source image format is not acceptable.
(error code -2).

eddiani:

It seems that every utility that has to do with DivX 5 must be modified for 5.0.1, the informations storaged are different
