View Full Version : Levels for AVCHD

I mostly back up my blu-rays to AVCHD on DVD9. The bitrates are usually between 6000 and 9000, depending on the length of the movie. I also try to keep the 1080p but would resize to 720p when the movie is very long.

So far I have used x264 with level 4.1 and 4 slices. However, I remember Dark Shikari mentioning that encoding with slices is less efficient. So, my question is - do I really need level 4.1 with 4 slices (with the bitrates I'm using) or should I use level 4.0 which doesn't require slices?

The compression penalty for using a few slices is trivially small at that resolution.

Thanks, I'll stay with 4.1 and slices then.

For compatibility I would use 4.0. BTW . You get nothing with 4.1 unless your bitrate is higher than 25Mbps. (Max bitrate for 4.0 is 25Mbps)
