View Full Version : xScaler - where's it at?!

I'm looking for more information about Microsoft's dithering technology "xScaler". I want to compare it to gradfun2db, and see how it performs.

I gather it's available as a single threaded (!) directshow filter, but can't find much info about it, or a download link for that matter.

Any info would be appreciated!

Interesting, I have never heard of xscaler before, and a google search only turned up about 2 pages about it. But, from what I gather, xscaler is fundamentally different than gradfun2db. xScaler is used to dither the color when converting from images with high color depth down to a lower color depth. If that is its only mode of operation, then it can't be used on material that is already at a low color depth, as you would with gradfun2db.

Sure. I just want to compare simple rounding + gradfun to xScaler.

I gather Deluxe (a big post / encoding company) has developed an app to cluster machines to use xScaler for high speed 10 bit -> 8 bit conversions with high quality dithering (for BluRay encoding, etc).

I deal with lots of 10 bit material in AviSynth, which unfortunately kills it :(
