I have a LG DVD recorder RH1999H with a 250GB hard drive. A few years ago, the DVD writer broke, it was replaced but I lost all the movies on the HD.

The same thing is happening now- we can record to the hard drive, but cannot copy/write to a DVD.The recorder needs to be repaired, but I am worried that I might lose all the movies on the HD again.

Is there any way of saving/copy the movies that is currently on the HD?

The DVD recorder does not have a USB port.

Put another DVD recording unit inside, it's just a regular LG DVD burner, most probably ATAPI/EIDE/PATA (not SATA). Sometimes it bears a different model name, but it's just a regular one. If the recorder does not recognize it, you must find a crossflashing FW for it (my JVC has eg a GCA-4120, which I assume is the GSA-4120 under a different name). The FS of the HDD is usually a proprietary one and if not "hacked" until now then it will never be.

That was a bit nasty, LG formatting your HD to replace a DVD drive

If itīs out of warranty, and your going to open it anyway .....
you could try connecting the hard drive in an external HD enclosure, or internally in your PC and copy everything that way.
Good luck.

Even if it did have a USB socket, I can pretty much gtee that it would not be any good..as due to cpyrt demands these sockets are all for input of media, to be played or stored on the Recorders hard disk. They NEVER allow writing to the USb port, because you know, you might save some programs on it! and then the world would end or the gods would be angry.. and they would "release the Kraken"
