I haven't updated my version of ffmpeg for a while (largely because I have some local patches that are a pain to reapply), so could somebody with a more recent version tell me whether it supports matroska version 2 yet?

And the answer, for future reference, is yes, despite the fact that the changelog doesn't mention it.

I have heard of Matroska Version 2 since maybe a couple of years ago?
I just did a quick visit to the wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matroska
A quick read down but it doesn't say anything about it. Another quick visit and read at the Matroska homepage but nothing mentioned either.
Is this 'V2' mature and ready for use, is it some kind of silent-update to the specs where the user will not notice it as long as the software is up-to-date? Reason I am interested is because I was going to choose MKV over MP4 for my next lot of VHS tape backups.
Thanks.

I think he means SimpleBlock. ffmpeg supports it, although it doesn't support writing the "skippable" flag which is pretty much only used to print accurate frame types in mkvinfo.
