View Full Version : MPC Home Cinema crashes when playing a DVD

Title says it all, really. This is a relatively recent install of Windows, I haven't changed my hardware and this was working OK on a previous install of Windows so I think it's a software problem. When I go into MPC, click 'Open DVD', and select my DVD drive, MPC simply crashes. Any ideas as to what might cause this or how I might go about diagnosing it? Thanks.

I don't really understand the relevance of that thread to my problem, dukey, perhaps you could elaborate. Especially considering this was working in my previous Windows XP install...

if the region is set wrong, mpc will just hang indefinitely

It doesn't hang. It crashes, and Windows pops up a crash dialog.

well the crash dialog might be helpful if you want people to help you

It's a standard Windows crash dialog, like "An unhandled exception has occurred in...".

occurred in what module? I think it usually mentions.
Also, what Video renderer.

The only relevant info I see is '... occurred in mpc-hc.exe [3240]'.
Video renderer is DirectShow - System Default, Old Renderer, and Overlay Mixer all crash the same.

What hes says is after a new OS install you will need to set the region of the DVD player. Simply goto winxp device manager, find your DVD drive and click properties. One of the tabs you see will be region. You need to set this before MPC will play DVDs, note this setting can be changed 5 times only if I remember right.

Razoola: I also have Elby DVD Region Killer running which ought to eliminate this requirement.

I think its possible you still need to set the region the first time before those kinds of programs will correctly work.

Just a wild guess: probably there is some driver or software which is conflicting with MPC(-HC). Have you tried to open a DVD in Windows Media Player? If even WMP is unable to play DVD-Video, then the registry went screwed somehow. Not so rarely, this can be caused by malware. Just my $1.99.

Heh, screwed somehow. Great diagnosis. ;-)

At least you'd be sure the problem does NOT come from Media Player Classic itself. Be ready for (another) fresh re-install of the OS, just in case... you really have to do that. :)
