I'm looking to re-encode a movie that when stripped of all the extras and unwanted audiostreams is about 600 megs over the 4.3gb limit for burning to DVD-R. As a result I have to re-encode and lower the bitrate to get the whole movie onto on DVD-R
I plan to use CCE 2.5 to do this and want to use 3-4 pass VBR. What is the best are in which to lower in order to save bits?
Should minimum Bitrate be set to 0?
Better to lower Maximum bit rate or lower avg bitrate? I don't think I need to lower too much to get the movie down to one DVD-R, but I want to know the best way of doing it.

Sorry I know this is not a response to your question but...
I too have a Sony CX-860 and I'm having problems getting it to play the videos I burned onto the media I bought from meritline.com (the el-cheapo $2.89/disk) I was wondering what media works for you and where you buy it from... thanks for your help...

I'm using media from cd-recordable.com (2.98ea). Both single sided and dual-sided seems to work well in the Sony 860. Burn with Prassi Primo. I burned my first disk using Nero and it played in my Pioneer DV-C503, but wouldn't play in anything else. Burned the same material on the same type of disk with Prassi, and it played fine in the Sony.
Good Luck.

keep in mind that, for now, ifoedit DOESN'T work with a m2v file created by cce

if you're just 600megs off, user ReMPEG on the first vob file only...here's the how to i got from MpuCoder's site (thanks MovieGuru!):
Rip the Movie With Smartripper Movie Mode and select Just the Video and AC3 sountrack.
Open rempeg and then open the first vob file of the movie. Drag the slider to 50% and leave everything else the way it is. Then limit the bitrate to 5000 or less if you really need a ton of space but it won't look good if less than 5000.
Name the file movie.m2v
After the encode, move the ifo file, the first vob, and the m2v file to a new folder. Run IFO edit and open the ifo file in the new folder.
Now, just choose remux and insert the movie.m2v file for the remux. Tell ifo edit to save it to the location where the other vobs are.
After it is done, move the ifo file back to the directory where the other vobs are.
Now, open ifo edit again and choose create new ifo, create new video_ts, remove popups,etc..
Now hit get vts and burn your film! Done!!!
If you need even more space, you can do 2 things. If the last vob is just credits you could just not burn it onto the disc.
Or, if the last vob has some of the movie and the credits use vobsplit 2.6 and trim out the stuff after the credits run for 30 sec or so.. You will need to open the last vob and get an idea where to trim with PowerDVD or whatever you use.
Optional extra step, Download the program called "BETTER FILE RENAME" and change everything in the VIDEO_TS folder to upper case.
Oh yeah, don't forget to rename all the vobs to 01 instead of 08,etc.. (Derrow, please add the rename the Vobs where we hit get VTS sectors and have it upper case everything if possible).
