View Full Version : Easily rip subs from DVD files for later OCR

I have ripped ALL of my DVD's (and that's a lot!) to ifo/vob-files on my HDD. Most of them are already converted successfully into x264 using Handbrake, but I would like to keep the vobsubs for later OCR, without the video/audio taking up space.

DVD Decrypter has a nice option to demux audio+video and leave ifo+vob files with just subtitles, that loads perfectly into Subrip. However, DVD Decrypter needs the disc, or at least an image loaded into a Daemon-Tools (or similar), and a lot of configuration for each disc. I really wish this could be accomplished in a more simple (semi-)automated way!

I had a look at vstrip. It looks like it can do something similar, but it just outputs a vob, and it doesn't work with Subrip :(

Are there other vob-editors, that can simply remove all the audio+video streams easily from the DVD-files, so I can just archive the subtitles?

I've been playing around with different tools. It seems that PgcDemux does a great job, quickly demuxing the subpicture-streams to .sup-files.

These can be loaded into SubtitleCreator and converted to different formats, or probably be OCR'ed directly. I will try this tonight :)

and why don't you use vobsub to rip the subs?

@odyssey

Hi!

DVDSubEdit is the tool you should look at. It will both rip and, remarkably quickly, perform OCR and save as a tiny [text] .SRT file (You can also first save as a [graphics] .SUP file, if you'd like) ...

Can't you archive the SUP files?
