I have the audio for my film readily encoded as MP3, how can I merge it with the DivX avi? I've tried using vdub but it only allows me to merge WAV files.

I can't im using DivX 4.12... I read somewhere that you can disguise the file header of the mp3 so virtual dub thinks its an WAV.

Yes you can use nandub for muxing only if you set video to direct stream copy. It can only encode to DivX3.11 however!

If you follow Doom9's guide for a DivX 4 encoding, and use the abr mp3 default settings in the Audio 1 tab, you will see the following:
azid in 2 passes to convert ac3 to wav
lame to convert wav to mp3
vdub for end-credits single pass
vdub in 2 passes to encode the main content
nandub to concatenate main and credits, and interleave audio and video.

hmmm..looks like another case of the "I should have read the guides first"

The guide doesn't tell actually tell you ... but these are the tasks that get batched and executed if you're doing an encoding according to the guide.
