Hello folks,

I have working software that produces AVI files containing MPEG-4 ASP video, I'd like to extend that with a option to support MPEG-2 video, but searching around haven't found any sample files, clues about FourCCs or even if this is supported.

Can just use plain MPEG transport stream but it would be nice to keep everything AVI, although playback support "out of the box" on things like Windows XP are important too. If users had to install an unusual codec that would not be OK.

If someone who knows what they're talking about could give me a thumbs up / down, that would be great. thanks.

It will go into AVI, not entirely successful, but will work with FourCCs of MP2A, MP2T, MP2V, EM2V, MMES, MPEG, MPG1, MPG2, 1001, 1002 ... FFDShow will decode FourCC of EM2V, MMES, MPEG, MPG1, MPG2, 1001, 1002 ...

You are likely to find that they play in only a few players. :)

not sure if it helps, but iirc. Ympeg got a vfw mpeg-2 encoder which can be used in virtual dub to create mpeg-2 videostreams inside an avi container,..

MEncoder can mux MPEG-2 into AVI and at least MPlayer will handle those files flawlessly. However it seems MEncoder uses a blank(?) FourCC
