Does anybody have a list .... or have suggestions .... on which software players mask the overscan? Quite a few homemade DVDs have unmasked noise, and it would be nice to "zoom in" on those discs. I think 1.2x or 1.3x would do.
VLC doesn't, not that I saw.

It does actually (as does MPC).
Ctrl-E (Effects and filters) : Video effects / geometry / magnification/zoom. Though using that interface you can't set an exact zoom level. To do that you have to use the full preferences.
However, to do what you want to do (crop away the overscan), you'd better do just that - crop away the desider number of pixels. Expand the video pref in full prefs.

Thanks, I see that now -- still not very user-friendly, however. It also resets easily, making it inconvenient, too.
A lot of the "zoom" functions on players don't hide the sides when you have a widescreen monitor.
