what is the difference between a quick and full when erasing a dvd-rw except for a huge time difference.

Full completely deletes the contents, Quick only deletes the header information so it is recognized as blank and when you write to it the old information gets overwritten.

would doing a full prolong the dvd-rw's life?

As far as I know it doesn't matter. The data gets erased as you are burning. In theory I would say that it would be more likley to prolong the life of your DVD-R drive since it would be less work on your laser to do the quick erase.
