I may not be saying this correctly as i I dnot know exactly what is the technical term for it even though it is quite evident if some of you know what i will be talking about, but my question is, with VHS or DVD that are encoded to be NTSC, whenever this is played back (i am talking in PAL land), i always find that the quality of the image changes, now i am aware that it has less scanlines and slightly lesser resolution, but what im talking is that i always find it a tiny bit brighter, like if it was given a brightness boost or a tint to lighten the image.

An example would be VHS, you can play an NTSC tape on a NTSC compatible PAL vhs player, and even if its the same film or whatever, the TV screen you appear to be brighter, like the blacks are not anymore solid etc. This can be the same case if one was capturing i believe (NTSC tape to NTSC DVD, viewing on a PC and still looks somewhat brighter).

I was wondering if anyone might know what this is exactly? could it be different colourspaces or seomthing? And also can this be fixed to work accordingly to look like if it were a 'PAL' signal?

I hope all of you understand what i mean, I can explain further if that isnt the case, and I look forward hearing acbk as well :D

setup

Your TV is set up to show 0IRE as black. US NTSC VHS tapes have 7.5IRE as black. You need to reduce the brightness control to watch them. Simple as that.

"Correct" capturing of NTSC will put black (7.5IRE) at digital 16, where it should be. Lots of devices capture NTSC incorrectly though.

(Of course UK VCRs don't output NTSC VHS as real NTSC - it'll be PAL60 or similar, which is even harder to capture).

Cheers,
David.

Hi David, thanks for that explaination, i take it this typically goes for those NTSC anime DVDs authored by companies such as ADVision which obviously is sourced from an NTSC VHS tape?

If thats the case, then that brightness would remain but doubled? Either way, what is needed to be done to get it to its 'coorect' IRE level? or for 0IRE which is for PAL and Japan? :D

If it's also wrong in the digital domain, just use AVIsynth levels command to fix it. Check the levels first with AVIsynth histogram filter.

Your DVD player may or may not add setup to "NTSC" analogue output. There may even be a setting for it in the DVD player's menu somewhere.

Cheers,
David.

Ahhh okay then, how would be able to enable this filter? and wat would have to look for exactly to adjust?

Is this the case for alot of oldschool anime DVDs? like Sonic the Hedgehog and A Kite? :D

Look for a setting in the DVD player video menu called setup, pedestal, black level, or something similar.

Cheers,
David.

EDIT: If you were asking about AVIsynth filters - go away and learn from http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page or just Google the things you don't understand - I'm not going to spoon feed you! ;)
