at least due to my ignorance I hope it is simple.

Reading over The Basics, FAQ, and tried doing key word searches of this section, and needless to say, I have not found the understanding I seek.

All I wish to do is make my DVD movie into a .avi or .mpg file for viewing over my network.

[DVD disk to single file; one step process.]

all I have seen show exceptionally complex means of taking a DVD and converting it to the ifo vob, etc files. but nothing with a simple function.
any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

You can try AutoGK. It's an easy tool to use for beginners without going into much details.

AutoGK can't handle many newer disks directly because of current copy protection schemes. It will if you have AnyDVD running in the background. This will be your easiest "one step process" with good results. If you want a completely free solution, pre-ripping with DVDFab HD Decrypter and encoding with AutoGK is a very simple two-step process.

AnyDVD + DGIndex + AviSynth + VirtualDub + DivX.

AnyDVD to decrypt the DVD files
DGIndex to demux the DVD files to MPEG2 video / AC3 audio
AviSynth to remux the MPEG2 video / AC3 audio and to apply filters (cropping, resizing, etc.)
VirtualDub + DivX to open the AviSynth avs file and to encode it into DivX.

I know this is not a 1-Click Solution but a 3-Click if you use the avs template feature of DGIndex. I think with more tweaking you can make it being a 2-Click solution.

Instead of VirtualDub and DivX you can use other software. If your favorite software doesnt accept avs files, there is a tool which creates an avi fake file (if the avi is accessed, the tool open the avs file and forwards it data into the avi).

Also if space isn't a concern and .mpg files are really fine for you, you can use programs like VOB2MPG or VideoRedo to simply remux the VOBs into a single MPEG2 file.
