View Full Version : WinDVD vs. Power DVD 4.0 XP chapter change ..

I have both WinDVD 3.0 and PowerDVD 4.0 XP - both play the SVCD mpeg file created by DVD2SVCD just fine. Quality of output is very close with the edge maybe going (IMO) to WinDVD for a more "film like" output.
When playing the bin/cue files created by DVD2SVCD that have been burned to a CD-R, I have noticed that WinDVD seems to go from chapter to chapter a lot more reliably than PowerDVD. When going FORWARD to the NEXT chapter, PowerDVD sometimes will give me about 1 second of the FIRST chapter before going from say chapter 5 to chapter 6?? Going in REVERSE, say chapter 8 to chapter 7, PowerDVD seems to work more reliably. BOTH software DVD players snap from chapter to chapter just fine with a NORMAL DVD
Has anyone else experienced chapter change UNreliability with with SVCD's with PowerDVD 4.0 ??
I might add here that chapter change with these SVCD's works perfect in my standalone Pioneer 525 DVD player.

Hi Bob01605,

exact same issue for me with PowerDVD 4.0 XP. It is a little bit annoying but in the end the chapters work. With WinDVD there is no such issue with these flashing first chapters but i prefer PowerDVD for its new features like using the mouse wheel for fast forwarding and rewinding and i think the usability is better than with WinDVD.

One thing i found out with PowerDVD is that it sometimes is complaining about "a bad SVCD" when i used an earlier version of dvd2svcd with this "image-size-bug" and i had to overburn the discs a lit bit to fit on the CD-R. In this case WinDVD just played them nice.

So it's good to have both software players and to wait if there will be a service pack for PowerDVD to fix that issue.

Greetings,
gerti67

P.S. Perhaps someone there who found a workaround for this?

Gerti67,

Thanks for your input - I was wondering if maybe this was a small glitch with my installation of PowerDVD 4.0. Maybe you are right in that they may offer an upgrade to get around this "first chapter flash" issue when changing chapters on SVCD's. Again, regular DVD's do no exhibit this little quirk when changing chapters.
