speaking to a few friends about DivX encoding, a few of them seem to think in order to get the best quality rip you shouldn't downsize the image at all (leaving it at full res).

I haven't tried this method myself yet, I've always stuck to the compressibility test's results. I might give it go when I get my new cpu...
Have any of you tried this?

Well, given unlimited bitrate and thereby CD recording space, they are of course right. Given DivX the best you can getis to set the resolution to max (i.e. 720x400 for 16:9) and set bitrate to 6000kbps. If this is recommended... No: Use miniDVD instead in that case. In my opinion, DivX shold only be used for bitrates below 1500kbs. And to get best result at that bitrate you most likely have to decrease the resolution. Above that, SVCD is the choise for best quality, or at even higher bitrates miniDVD or DVD-R.

I've already seen a lot of very good encoding movies and I've never seen one go over the 700*... resolution. In fact the more pixels there is the more the encoder have to dispose of kbits. Otherwise the quality will decrease pretty quick.

the smaller the resolution the more information from the image you loose though..
