I have formatted our computer and each time I do it there seems to be something I end up missing. The DMA is enabled but when we use Smartripper the speed jumps back and forth and does't even out. It runs anywhere from 0.4 to 4.7. If anyone could help me I would really apprecite it. Thanks

This is normal activity while ripping. It also depends on the DVD your trying to rip as well. Some rip much faster than others.
If somebody has a magix fix I've yet to hear it:)

Thanks for your reply but I do realize some bouncing in the spped is normal but usually it does even out and stays pretty even. I'm talking about it bouncing from 4.7 to 0.4 and then back again. With it doing this we are finding the movies are hesitating about every 30 sec or so.

So if I understand you correctly, you prolly can hear your drive spinning up and down? This is strange actually. Is this a newer driver? What model? Are you sure you have it as a master instead of a slave? What motherboard? You might need to post your specs before we can attempt to help. Sorry for all the ???s:)

Yes, I know, you may have a hardware or a setup problem. I know changing speeds as well, but I'm currently changing my SmartRipper setup. Because there is one more reason for me! What do you prefer - a fast or a clean rip? It seems almost like ripping Audio CDs: There are fast ways but you may get a few errors. Or you give it a little more time to avoid them.
I know, ripping Audio CDs is different from ripping DVDs - Audio CDs have less error correction codes. But in my experience, less speed gives more reliable rips. For example, with SmartRipper running in normal extraction mode, my TOSHIBA SD-M1222 rips mostly between 4x and 6x, sometimes goes down below 2x (e.g. at VOB changes and maybe due to stream processing or error correction) - but I have up to half a dozen CRC errors in AC3 files. In ASPI reading mode, it only runs at around 1.5x speed, but steadily, and I have no errors anymore.
Now I ask you all (BTW: once again - I already asked this once!): Why do I get CRC errors in ripped files, but SmartRipper does not detect it as read error? There are multiple levels of error detection and correction, but the written file is obviously not the same as on the DVD after a fast rip. Conclusion: I don't produce DivX files like on an assembly line, I prefer quality, therefore I can stand taking a bit more time for ripping.

We don't hear the dvd rom speeding up or slowing down but we do notice it in Smartripper when we are ripping the files that the speed is jumping. We are running a PIII 800 with 384 megs of ram and the dvd rom is a Matshita DVD Rom SR-8584A. We are looking for quality not quantity and the last couple we just did have run them through VirtualDub and it took the hesitation out. Thanks for your help:)
