I'm very new to this and I've only ripped a regular English movie using GKnot in Divx4 (using SmartRipper) before. Now I'm having trouble getting audio in Japanese and subtitles in English when ripping my anime dvds (starting with Evangelion). The first time I ripped it, I just did it the way the guide here: http://www.doom9.org/gknot-divx4.htm said to. But then my .vob files had English for the audio (which I do not want). So I ripped it again, this time I enabled stream processing (not really knowing what it does), and unchecked everything there but the "Video NTSC", the "Audio Japanese", and the "Subtitle English" thinking that this might solve my problem. Which it did, for the audio atleast, but now when I go into VobSub and try to index the .ifo file from my hard drive, it says that it can't. I was able to index the subtitles just fine with what I ripped the first time, so why isn't it working now? The Doom9 VobSub guide is greatly lacking in information.

Thanks in advance,

you shouldn't have to enable stream processing to get both english and japanese languages as well as english subs. if your rip in "movie mode", everything should be there. it's strange that it's not for you...

you want japanese audio with english subs, right?

after you rip the movie (use "movie mode" don't enable stream processing), go into VobSub. when you open VobSub, you will be presented with a new dialogue. press "open..." to load the .ifo file. when the .ifo file is opened, the program will automatically identify all of the available subtitles: english, japanese, russian, hindi, and whatever. remove the ones that you don't want by highlighting them and then pressing the "<--" botton. in the bottom two panes of the program, make sure the left one is empty and the right one if full (these are your vob's. VobSub should put all the vob's in the right pane automatically). now, press "OK". if it doesn't work, you have to start the process again, this time pressing, "i've crossed my fingers".

**by the way, you can upgrade to version 2.08 of vobsub without affecting anything in GKnot. this might help a bit.

that's the subtitles... now the audio:

open the .ifo and find out which track is japanese. (you should have a bunch of ac3 files if there are multiple audio languages on your DVD. i think part of reason you had english audio before was because you selected your ac3 incorrectly). the only way to tell which audio track is which is to open the ifo and find out.

**I also sent you a pm, so just disregard whichever message you read second.**

Thank you for responding to my question. I can get the subtitles now, but I don't know how to open the .ifo file in order to discern what .ac3 is the Japanese one. What do I open the .ifo file with? I tried opening it in Notepad, but just got a bunch of unintelligible symbols.

Thanks again,

When you use SmartRipper, it will create a .txt file in the same folder it rips the .vobs to. That .txt file will describe the .ifo.
