I currently have an analog video capture card and an infrared sensor linked to it the which use a 3.5mm jack. Add to that the remote and the software that came along with it.I can control several apps through shortcuts. You get the idea.

This equipment work ok, i use it since sometime now but it could be better i'm sure.

The downsides:

First of all i'm obliged to press several times on a button on the remote to change the volume, channel...whatever. Ideally i'd only need to keep my finger on the button.

Second of all, if i'm not in the direct path of the sensor i'll get nothing as a result.Kinda frustrating at times.

And finally, sometimes a button trigger unwanted actions.I guess that's a problem when you use shortcuts although i've taken great care to configure this the best way i could.

I heard of several things and i wanna know if someone here use them:
Girder, remote with a trackball (to control the mouse) and also
this sensor (with a 45° degrees reception capability) (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_05711889000P?cascycle=true&mv=rr)

The goal would be to have an ease of use (just like a normal tv/remote) and control everything

I have a media center type setup with a infared receiver and a remote. Google MyRemoteMouse. ;) Works like a charm for me.

now 78 veiws an only 2 replies.

IR is Line of sight only.
Then your sensor as well as the LED in your RC have a directivity. So unless both directivies overlapp and provide a sufficient strong signal its no go. Or would you expect your cars head lamp to also illuminate cars behind you.

You may place mirrors in your room that you can use as reflector to the sensor, if you dont have direct LOS, but as I said Line of Sight means just that.

As to the autorepeat it might not be supported, but without details on what you use no one will be able to reply. May thats why you got so many views and no reply.

Get a radio based remote (http://ati.amd.com/designpartners/media/images/remote.jpg) (IR sucks) + x10receiver (http://x10receiver.net/)!

Not much you can't do with this combo... ^^

Another IR option:

A friend of mine has one, and it's really nice and easy to use.
