I have for a long time watched my HD recorded xbox gameplay on my computer at about 8 mbps. The only player that can actually play this back smoothly is WMP. I have tried VLC, MPlayer, and various other media players, but they all come back choppy.

I don't have an overly strong processor (Core 2 @ 2.0 GHz), but how is it that an out of the box app from MS can play this back smoother than a plethora of open source media players? Do I have options to use these, like compiling various decoders and using them with media players?

You need to use a multithreaded decoder, and a fast renderer.

I suggest Media Player Classic HC with ffdshow tryouts providing the ffmpeg-mt H.264 decoder. I usually use Haali renderer, but EVR Custom Presenter is very good as well. If you have a strong video card, MadVR is awesome as well.

I'm guessing your content is H.264, so that should do nicely :)
