I apologise if this question has been asked before elsewhere but when I tried a search on bitrate the list seemed to go on forever.

Been backing up my DVD's for many years now using CCE and scenarist to start with before moving onto DVD Rebuilder of which I've used the PRO version for the last few years, so a quick thanks JDobbs after all this time for a great tool.

Recently started to use BD Rebuilder to encode and rebuild my BluRays and I have a question regarding the bitrates (Yes there was going to be a question in here eventually!)

Whenever I backed up my DVD's I always ensured that the bitrate for all areas was never below 3000 and any extra was left in the main movie. After running BD Rebuilder last night (and all day!) it gave the following report:

[00000]
AUDIO=11000000000000
PGS=110000000000000000000000000
M2TS_TARGET=18248614029
RATE=8836
NSIZE=17360037888
FLINK=0
MLINK=0
[00018]
AUDIO=11111111111111
PGS=110000000000000000000000000
M2TS_TARGET=243350664
RATE=1936
NSIZE=253642752
FLINK=0
MLINK=0
[00019]
AUDIO=11111111111111
PGS=100000000000000000000000001
M2TS_TARGET=390127556
RATE=1955
NSIZE=406523904
FLINK=0
MLINK=0

I understand that the rate of 8836 is for the movie but the rate of 1936 and 1955, are these the equivalent rates similar to a DVD backup or is a bitrate of 1936/1955 acceptable on Blu Ray?

1900 in a DVD used to be very blocky in my experience which is why I always aimed for above 3000. Sorry again if the question has already been asked and answered elsewhere.

And thanks again for all the work you've done in DVD Rebuilder and BD Rebuilder over the years, JDobbs.

I would guess those sections are extras in SD resolution.

2000kbps is plenty--if anything, twice as much as is necessary--for good SD quality. Remember, DVD Rebuilder was MPEG-2.

The selected output rates are all calculated to be proportional to the space they occupied on the original disc. The exception would be if you selected "quick encoding for extras", in which a fixed CRF value would be used for the output.

When you see low bitrates like that, it's often associated low demand sources like still screens or blank sections used for seeking. I can't tell from listing if this represents everything encoded or if this was a movie-only or full backup... but since it only adds up to about 18GB in total target size I'd guess there is more.

Remember (as Dark Shikari mentioned) that H264 (AVC) can do a lot more with a specific bitrate than MPEG-2 could.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Sorry, it is a full Blu Ray backup with movie and extras and all English streams.

I've attached the full list.

When I look at the stream tab in BD Rebuilder all the ones that attract the low bitrates say VID_000** MPEG-2, 480i, 29.97fps, *** MB. Looks like about 4.5GB of the original disk.

Looks like about 4.5GB of the original disk.Then it fits perfectly into Dark Shikari's note. That is more than enough bitrate to give high quality from the SD sources.
