I am using Windows XP SP3.

Is there a secure way to clean the register and remove ALL CODECS and stuffs installed after Windows original state? I am lost now in configuring MPC-HC and other players, and even by uninstalling/removing K-Lite's codec pack and MPC itself, I keep seeing filters not registered, and things messed up.

Bottom line: I want to REMOVE EVERYTHING without damaging Windows and making unusable, but simply put, everything that was installed AFTER Windows booted for the first time, related to codecs and stuff related.

What do you recommend? :thanks:

I did this once. Download Zoom Player, hunt around in the advanced options menu until you find an option to "Unregister all codecs". Do this, and then use "Re-register Windows base codecs". You'll be back to a clean codec chain. Be aware that this will not delete all the filters from your HDD, so you may at some point need to clean up one or more to avoid DLL hell on an install.

You can also check out Filmerit or use G-Spot's built-in tool, but be aware that you'll have to do this manually, filter-by-filter.

Instead of blindly removing everything, you should remove just those things that are broken or unneeded.

With the K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool you can generate a list of all codecs and DirectShow filters that are installed on your computer. It has the ability to hide the ones that belong to Windows itself, so that you get a list of just the third party ones. Post that list here if you need help to decide which filters you can/should remove.

Here's my current status from Codec Tweak Tool. Please let me know if you find something wrong. :logfile:

Remove these ones:
c:\windows\system32\diracsplitter.ax
c:\windows\system32\matroskadx.ax
c:\windows\system32\mpeg2decfilter.ax
c:\windows\system32\aac_parser.ax
c:\windows\system32\rlapedec.ax
c:\windows\system32\coreaac.ax
c:\windows\system32\rlmpcdec.ax
c:\windows\system32\rlspeexdec.ax
c:\windows\system32\rltheoradec.ax

These filters were probably installed by some kind of video conversion program. For example "Super" creates such a mess of unnecessary (and old) filters.

Use this command to unregister a filter:
Start -> Run -> regsvr32 /u "c:\path\to\file"

You might also want to remove this filter, or lower its merit if you use PowerDVD to play divx video:

Description: DivX Decoder Filter
File name: c:\arquivos de programas\cyberlink\powerdvd9\videofilter\dxdec.ax
CLSID: {8652BB68-F961-4027-9908-5652EBC2D3A9}
Merit: FF800000
