View Full Version : Codec comparison

I'd say it's the most comprehensive comparison produced so far - it's certainly proved the sharpness/smoothness claim between the major codecs (as well as why WMV8 should be shunned).
And since no one else has noticed it yet (I can only assume), thanks for the hard work Doom9!

Very impressive.
And enough to finally make me take a serious look at XviD.

How have you resisted my bias for so long?!

i would very much like to see screenshots of original dvd frames to compare them.
otherwise good job. for some reason i didn't expect differnt results :)

Well Doom9 did state the frames he used for each movie... if you have the DVD you can see for yourself.

Doom9 still does the best comparisons; painstakingly accurate and well worth reading - thanks for the good work!

Fine job Doom9-painstakingly detailed and objective.
I'm with MxxCon, though-I think the source frames should have been included. And I own neither DVD (heresy-I know), nor have I ever ripped them.

Hooo-ah Doom9 dude yer dedication be showing.. hmm this calls fer a new year good wish for Doom9 bloke WOT you dont know that its almost the Chinese New Year well then all ya western blokes are missing out! OK what to wish fer hard workin Doom9 bubba.. hmm gotta be something OONIK! OK hows about an extra 3 inches on yer peter to impress the female yokels! Remember its all in the waggle..
Oh hey suggestion on reducing bandwidth for the compare.. instead of having full-size snapshots which doesn't show the diff all that well anyway like ya said, why not just have one reference pic from the DVD, then have smaller zoom pics from the different codecs that highlight the areas with the most difference..
Oh yeah on this Xvid thingie how to use.. is it like Divx 4 where ya just stick it into VDub twice and the 2nd time it reads off some stats file or something..

I'll put up an xvid guide later today.. it's mostly only copy&paste anyways. as for the source frames.. I think the point of a comparison is to show how the codecs do compared to each other.. we all know the quality is worse than the original

Great job! But, how about an ZIP file with the comparison in it, for download?

Excellent job Doom9. Many thanks for your time.
It certainly got my juices flowing on XviD so I had to try it today. Result? It certainly suprised me beating out my 1CD NanDub/Gknot method. Best of all I won't be forced to go with DivX4:D

I agree, great job doom9! The only way I could see the article be any better is if it was interactive and allowed us to choose the codec for each scene and have it pop directly over the original dvd frame. Woops sorry for the abstract suggestion, I got too much computer science in my blood and a desire to not get things done that I need to get done... so kudo's for the Work of artICLE!! :D
Edit: Feb 17, 2002, was I smoking pot when I posted this stupid post?:D

It was a lot of work and really appreciated.
Over in the Gknot threads, there's been a great deal of "sharp bicubic is best" amongst DivX4 codec users. Your work, Doom9, has help shed light on why that recommendation seems to appear alot.
