Im encoding using gordian knot, and i was just wondering whether i should check the follow it-bu standard (or whatever it is exactly i forget) currently im watching my rips on my pc monitor and they look fine either way
but i intend to watch them on a widescreen television using a tv out gfx card in a few months...will de selecting this option cause the film not to fill the entire screen? i have noticed quite a few rips are very thin / wide pictures...

The Mod asking a question? :)
My understanding is that you check that Follow The Standard box and a 1.85:1 movie will fill up the screen (wish I had a wide screen TV to test). Of course a 2.35:1 movie will leave small black bars on top and bottom, but those new-fangled TVs have a zoom feature which will allow you to cut off some of the sides and still fill the screen.
Good job you and digi1 did on the FAQ.

just for interest, the black bars playing a 2.35:1 movie on a 16:9 tv are not really "small" ;) , but players or tv can always zoom in.

Yep,
sometimes videocars don't allow to zoom in or out like nvidia's.
Use tvtool v5 : you can zoom wherever you want....
