Hi everybody !
I just encoded my first movie, and the avi size is only 656Mb, it should be 700Mb. I know Divx 4.12 is a bit unpredictable, but other users don't seem to have such big differences between previsions and results.
How could I improve that ?
I have read faq and other guides without any solutions.. please help!
Thank you!
PS: I'm french, sorry for my bad english...

How much was your first/final pass size? Maybe the movie compressed very well..Or the audio was smaller than you check at bitrate(if you used mp3)

being 30MB off seems normal to me. i'm also using the 4.12 codec and get very unpredictable file sizes. if you are really concerned about file size, then you could do what i do:
1. encode the movie (first and second pass + audio) normally.
2. after the avi has been created, check it's properties by rigt clicking on the file's icon.
3. do the math. say for example you get a file size of 673MB. take 700MB and divide it by 673. (700/673) then you'll get some number like 1.0345. take that number and multipy it by the KB value in the file's properties list. (674,123,456 * 1.0345). take that result (which might be 735,123,456) and enter it into the GKnot file size box in the bitrate tab of the program.
4. next, go to the audio box of the bitrate tab in the GKnot program and enter the exact value of your mp3 file.
**you should now notice that your bitrate is a little bit higher than it was the first time you encoded the movie.**
5. go to the encode tab of the program, press "new job", load up all of your files, make sure to check second pass in the menu at the top of the new window!!!
6. start up the job. the resulting file size should be a bit closer to what you want. it's not perfect, but it does put you within 5-7MB of your target file size (700MB).
---i've typed this all from memory, so parts of it might not be exactly how it's done.
by the way, if anyone knows of a better, faster way to get close to the desired file size, tell me!!! ;)

I set the filesize to 710MB.
Then I add the audio by bitrate (I usually use 96) in the Audio A area
Then I set the bits/pixel to around .20
Then I run a comp test.
Then I load the comp test file and make the resolution as big as I can without the % dropping below 40% and without the zoom going over 100%.
I usually end up between 5-10 MB of 700 (but never over).
Not perfect, but close enough.

When i try to choose the cd size, the only option i get bigger than 700 is 705. I read in some other post that a guy was choosing 730. How can i do this?

don't select a predefined size of the dropdown list,
just enter your filesize in the filesize textbox.
