Here's the deal :

buy ati sapphire 4550 not working after inserting -> black screen after booting confirmed the card and my system are ok with a different HDD with windows XP completely reinstall windows XP home boot up normally with the 4550 - new hardware is found install drivers - tried newest as well as the cd ones after driver install - black screen with cursor

Now the thing is that drive I checked the card with happened to have XP Pro on, so I later found out, so what did I do, I installed xp home on that same drive that worked before trying to figure out if xp home was the problem.
It didn't work so I figured, however unlikely it may seem, the problem lied with home.

Then I installed a new version of Xp pro on that same drive that had worked before and again no problem untill I install the drivers, resulting in a black screen after the windows loading screen.

These are the things I tried :
Win XP Home SP2 (original fujitsu siemens cd) = NOT Win XP Home SP2 (original fujitsu siemens cd) +sp3 installed over it = NOT Win XP Home SP3 (oem cd) = NOT Win XP Home SP3 (retail) = NOT Win XP Pro SP2(was already on the drive I received- clean apart from msn) = Yes Win XP Pro SP3 = NOT

Now i just wonder what could be the problem here, if it were :
my mobo - it wouldn't have worked at all the windows updates/service pack 3 - it should have worked on my original cd xp home/pro - just doesn't make any sense

If anyone has got something that I missed or has any idea at all, I'd love to hear it

For the people that wonder why I didn't just keep the drive that worked. It's a 3GB drive wich is super slow and sounds like a fighterjet taking off, BUT IT WORKED. An aquaintance gave it to me so I don't have the same version ready for use.

The solution is to INSTALL WINDOWS 7 :D

I kid (mostly).

If you need to get this new video card working with XP, I'd make sure you have any possible dependencies installed first - i.e. the .NET frameworks, Visual C++ runtimes etc... You'd think there would be checks for all this stuff during the driver install, but I'd be willing to be your black screen issue comes from something like this.

Also, make sure your motherboard drivers (and other drivers) are installed and up-to-date before attempting any of this!

I would also post on the ATi forums, if you don't figure it out quickly.

What CDs are you using to install? I have MSDN images of all the versions of XP SP3, and these have never failed me. Vendor specific CDs can be problematic in some cases.

Finally, you're sure the rest of your system is up to spec for that video card? The 4550 doesn't draw much power or anything, but you should list your specs anyway :)
