View Full Version : How to get proper text displayed when pressing Titlelist

I've hand crafted a DVD/IFO structure, but if I press "titlelist" on the remote I just get "Title 1", "Title 2", etc.
How could I get those to show movie names instead?
Thanks!

Tried TitleWriter, but no joy - even though it successfully writes the DVD-Text (checked it with IFOEdit).
So the problem remains......
Maybe it's something specific about Sony DVD players and titlelist? Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks!

The DVD-Text data is completely ignored by most players, or they use only the General Name (to identify the DVD itself) but ignore the other fields. It's probably why there are almost no commercial DVDs with DVD-Text data.
If IfoEdit displays the correct Title name, then it's probably a player issue.

@jon33
Hi!
Try checking your COMMERCIAL DVDs with IFO Edit. When you find one that contains "DVD-Text", play it and see if the text is available/visible when selected.
If not, it's a limitation of your player.
I must tell you that, if I remember correctly, the entire line of SONY standalone (standard) DVD players has "DVD-Text" display capability...

Sony standalone DVD players also will display Jacket Pictures when DVD is stopped.

I have one of the most sophisticated $ony player (the DVP-S725D), and it can only display the DVD-Text General Name. There is no support for the other DVD-Text fields and for the jacket picture (although you can define your own background image to show when nothing is playing).

Hi.
Thanks for info. So, it seems it's not DVD-Text that's being displayed in TitleList.
So, I recorded a DVD-Video on the Sony recorder, and lo and behold, pressing TitleList shows the titles recorded.
Having analysed the DVD a bit, there is no DVD-Text, but there is a VIDEO_TS.VOB which contains the Top Menu (shown with Top Menu button), but that is not the same as that shown in the TitleList.
Having searched the whole DVD for the titles as ascii strings, and not found them, I can but a assume that they are somewhere, but encoded in some way.
IFOEdit and PGCEdit give no clues.
Any inspiration where they are?

Except the DVD-Text and the Provider ID, there is no ASCII text in the IFOs or VOBs. I suppose therefore that the title names are hardcoded as an image or subpic in a menu.
There are also non-standard tricks such as DVD@ccess (http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/dvd_access_link_file.html), but they work only with specific software players, and IMO they should be used with extreme caution.

When you say you recorded, do you mean a DVD recorder (not burned on a computer)? If so look in the video_rm folder at video_rm.ifo
Ifoedit will not be able to decipher this file so use a hex editor, and you should see the show titles. Sony recorders put the first title at offset 0x1840, the second at 0x1A40, and so on.

Thanks, mpucoder, this sounds interesting. Yes, recorded on the Sony DVD recorder. However, there's only one folder (VIDEO_TS), which contains VIDEO_TS.* and VTS_0?_?.*. There's no sign of the video_rm - and nothing hidden that I can see (the DVD was "finalised", though I can't think that makes a difference). Any inspiration?

Simple enough to find out -- open the dvd (Say in TW or PgcEdit) and see if there is a titlelist Menu Button -- Frame advance into the images -- if you see text its coded into the menu images (as R0lz said) (to change you would have to reauthor the Menu images (ouch))
To perhaps change:
Remove the menu >> TW can make a fairly comprehensive Menu (MakeMenu) (using prior DVD-Text data entered / Imported from Movie Chapter Database) pretty fast -- Perhaps that gets you where you want to be.
Otherwise (the only other place I can think of is in the .vob packs) Sony is known for mucking up things -- though I can't believe even they would be stupid enough to create a new streaming pack header (and hard processor/ing) for this gimmick since DVD-TEXT is there.
FYI -- Its mainly the jukeboxes (Though my Pioneer Elite player (single disk) shows the text) that show deep DVD-Text (Beyond DVD Volume Name) Older sony jukes went deeper -- newer seem not to
I just goofed around with my Pioneer juke once -- it displayed dvd Text changes all the way down to the cell level .. scrolled on LED and pushed it into Jukes internal INFO system
