Apologies if this has already been discussed to death elsewhere.

I shot some footage with my Samsung DVD Cam, which I need to transfer to my PC, edit and create a PAL DVD from the edited material.

Basically I would like to know which format is advisable to use for converting the original VOB to AVI, editing and saving the various clips, before joining it all together to create the DVD contents.

I do realize that one can't say one format is better than the other, but perhaps there are advantages in using one compared to the other (apart from the file sizes).

The DV codecs I have (in Sony Vegas) are Sony DV and MainConcept DV.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think you actually have a Vob file to convert but anyway. As I dont have a samsung dvd cam are you going to use the software that came with yours to extract your footage for conversion? It may have its own codec m2ts or similar already for you.

However without knowing exactly about your situation why not use huffyuv http://neuron2.net/www.math.berkeley.edu/benrg/huffyuv.html

If editing means cutting out some parts of the VRO file (I think Samsung outputs a VRO) you can do this without the need to convert it first to AVI.

The most elegant solution would still be the frameserving. :search:

Samsung output VOB files. One has to finalize the disc before taking it out to be used on a DVD player and for editing.

I'll check the frameserving out :)
