alright ive got like 4 blurays that use this just wonderfful vc-1 codec.

nothing ive tried can convert this, nothing i have can even PLAY it. i think i got one converted once, but it took days on a core2duo and was choppy.

i imagine this has been asked before, so could somebody post a link to the answer or point me in the right direction.

Thanksguys. this site is a lifesaver sometimes.

dont have 15$ to spend on a decoder. if it was 5bux i'd get it, since it seems extremely useful.

Also try ffmpegsource or DSS2(). Not quite as versatile all around as the NV tools, but may work...

1) You can convert your BluRay discs from VC-1 to AVC/H264 with any one of several programs, including "BD Rebuilder" and "multiAVCHD"

2) You can play your VC-1 BluRay discs on your PC using PowerDVD

As far as I know HandBrake is able to easily convert those. Give it a try.

Hi!

1) You can convert your BluRay discs from VC-1 to AVC/H264 with any one of several programs, including "BD Rebuilder" and "multiAVCHD"

2) You can play your VC-1 BluRay discs on your PC using PowerDVD

multiAVCHD won't actually convert the VC-1 video stream into a avchd/mpg4/h.264 video stream.

BDRebuilder I never seem to been able to get to work for me. Now in all honesty, it could have been a problem with the blu-ray's I was trying to convert, or even with the computer system. I gave up before I ever found out a solution.

The Blu-ray VC-1 discs I had issues with, are Torchwood, and a few other BBC / Warner Brother releases.

Interesting enough, pyTiVo which does a good job converting the VC-1 video stream into MPG2 or MPG4 and transfering to my TiVo has major ISSUES with Torchwood MKV's that contain a VC-1 video stream. YET... have NO problems converting an MKV VC-1 video stream of CBS/Parmounts Star Trek Blu-rays (TOS & the Movies).

I have yet to get my Torchwood/Dr. Who Blu-rays to play on anything but my LG BD390 player either from the original Blu-ray, or from a Blu-ray copy. (Blu-ray discs play fine) but no other device of mine will play Torchwood/Dr. Who unless it on an actual physical Blu-ray disc. Star Trek on the other hand.

So Torchwood & Star Trek are only 2 examples. I have had major issues with lots of other VC-1 encoded Blu-rays as well. I have also been succesfull on a bunch of other VC-1 encoded Blu-rays as well. I think there must be some other issues going on. I am using AnyDVD to rip all my Blu-ray's.

I am going to try a few other programs that were mentioned previously in this thread.

I started a thread about this exact issue a few months ago. You might want to hunt that thread up and see the suggestions that were made to me in that one as well. Some worked very well for me, others did not.

If I am not mistaken (And I could possibly be mistaken) but I believe ffmpegsource is used by pyTiVo to do conversion before the Video file is sent/transfered to TiVo DVR's.

I do know that pyTiVo does a fantastic job of transfering SOME VC-1 / AC3 Mkv's / m2ts files to my TiVo's. Once the transfer is complete, the video quality is fantastic. (I have a TiVo HD and TiVo S3, both capable of 1080i DD5.1 capability at 25mbps)

I said SOME VC-1 encoded MKV's because I haven't been succesfull getting some other VC-1 MKV's to transfer.

All of the Star Trek: TOS & Star Trek Blu-ray movies I was able to succesfully demux/remux into VC-1 MKV's and succesfully transfer and play on my TiVo's.

Torchwood, Dr. Who, 7th moon, Grace and a few other BBC / Warner Brothers & Ghosthouse Blu-rays that I have, have NOT been able to demux & remux & get to play on my TiVo. All the video on those blu-rays have VC-1 encoded video.

I use AnyDVD to rip all of my Blu-rays. All I can think is that maybe the "Encryption" DRM used by BBC/Warner Brothers & Ghosthouse is different than that being used by CBS/Paramount on the Star Trek Blu-rays. Maybe AnyDVD isn't fully removing all of the encryption. However, I don't think that is the case either. As PowerDVD will play the ripped M2TS files on my computer without issue, & I can burn new Blu-ray disc copies and they play without issue as well.

So who knows...

One thing have noticed though, is MORE & MORE HD media players that are coming to market are now capable of playing VC-1 MKV content. Here is an example of a few....

Popcorn hour C200 (Model number I think)
Western Digital HD media player
Netgears no HD media player.

My LG BD390 Blu-ray/Network media player doesn't play VC-1 MKV's yet, (Will play MPG2/H.264 MKV's) will soon have VC-1 MKV support in a future firmware update.

Biggest problem with media players and other equipment playing VC-1 content is licensing fees. Use of H.264/MPG2 decoders don't require licensing fees. Use of a VC-1 decoder or encoder on a commercial level require licensing fees.

Seems like a great program.....

Only problem... you need a NVidia graphics cards with Cuda capability.

Doesn't work for those of us who have ATI video cards! LOL

Nope I am correct... per your post that you provided the link too.

It's the DECODER that does the decoding of the VC-1 video track. NOT multiAVCHD that does it. So you need MORE than just multiAVCHD you need the decoder too.

Along with needing AVISynth.

I personally am trying to stay away from AVISynth.. as it requires writing code script files. Isn't their a program that will write the script files for me? Can't someone write a program that can just be point n click without having to write script files?

Can anyone give us a actual step by step process to complete this task. Using a program that doesn't require an Nvidia graphics card.

Here are the steps I use to succesffully create an MKV with MPG2/H.264 video track and DTS audio track.

1. Using AnyDVD Rip the blu-ray to my hard drive as a folder.

2. Using EAC3TO demux the Video track & DTS audio track, while at the same time downcoverting the DTS-HD audio track to DTS.

3. Using MKVmerge Gui, Make an MKV file out of the demuxed video track & DTS sound track.

4. Tranfer to my NAS

5. Play on my LG BD390 Blu-ray/Network media player, or use pyTiVo to transfer to my TiVo to view. (The BD390 plays MKV's with DTS content, pyTiVo converts the DTS audio to AC3 audio & the TiVo plays MPG2 & H.264 video without any needed transcoding)

A very simple 5 step process.

This process will work SOMETIMES with SOME Blu-rays that use VC-1. Ie it worked with Star Trek: TOS & the Star Trek Movies but it did not work with Torchwood, Dr. Who, or any of the "Ghosthouse" blu-ray titles. Even then Star Trek VC-1 MKV's only work with the pyTivo to TiVo transfer. They won't play on the LG BD390. At least not until LG does their firmware update to support VC-1 MKV's.

I have tried BD-Rebuilder, but either my computer isn't able to handle BD-Rebuilder, or Torchwood, Dr. Who & the other "Ghosthouse" titles have issue with it. Does BD-Rebuilder require a NVidia graphics card? If so maybe thats the problem as I have an ATI video card.

You all make it sound so simple... yet if it was so simple... why are so many of us having issues! LOL ;)

I honestly do appreciate everyones input & help on these issues. My apologies but I am just very very frustrated with this issue. I haven't found a simple easy fix yet.

Your desire to make everything appear either futile or hopeless is now bordering on the absurd:I personally am trying to stay away from AVISynth.. as it requires writing code script files.If you had tried to use multiAVCHD, you would know that YOU are NOT required to create any scripts! This is one of the fully transparent, automated tasks performed within multiAVCHD...

And, as far as encoders/decoders, either FFMPEG or FFDShow (I forget which) are likewise included in and transparently called from the "Tools" subdirectory of multiAVCHD.

Sorry... My Bad...

Hey I have found the following solutions that work for some instances.

MakeMKV..... Does a great job with Blu-rays encoded with h.264 and either DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD. It will create a MKV file with the core DTS or AC3 audio track. One program one easy step. Even if the movie/TV show is multiple M2TS files, it will combine those into your one MKV file. Works great. I love this little program. Still in beta, still has some issues. But hey its a great start.

Handbrake... I haven't quite got it figured it out yet. I am still working on it. Haven't given up hope yet. Still learning. From what I can tell from my first attempts. It does a decent job of converting VC-1 video to h.264. It doesn't support downconverting DTS-HD to DTS, but it does support DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD to AC3. If it does support DTS-HD to DTS-core then I haven't figured out how to do it yet.

VC12AVI.... New little program I stumbled on just a few days ago. It converts the VC1 to AVI in multiple files. Doesn't do a thing with audio though. Now I am trying several other programs to put all the AVI's back together again along with the downcoverted audio (DTS or AC3) and written into a h.264 MKV. Several seem to work. I just haven't found the one I like the best yet. Still in the testing stages. Seems promising though.

I am now trying (expirimenting) with other VC-1 encoded blu-rays besides "Torchwood" as it seems that "Torchwood" is using 1080i VC1 instead of 1080p VC1 and that seems to create some issues apparently with some programs. Dr. Who blu-rays seem to be the same way.

I HAD been testing with "Torchwood" so that may have been part of why I have been having so much trouble. Who knows.

Undoubtedly, someone else will have the same question in about 3 hours and it would be useful to have ALL of it in one place and no conflicting or redundant advice coming up in searches.

I have closed out the other 2 threads I started & asked the moderator to lock those threads. As the original post of those 2 threads has those issues solved &/or answered. ie Torchwood issues, and Audio/Video sync issues with h.264 mkv's.

Here is my update as to where I stand.

1. I don't need any help or suggestions for program usage when it applies to processing MPG2 &/or h.264 Blu-rays. Including the use of DTS-HD & TrueHD to DTS & AC3. I have figured out what programs I find easiest/quickest for my end result.

2. My problem still exists with converting VC-1 video tracks to MPG2 &/or H.264. Some of my VC-1 content is INTERLACED.

I have tried with some success and failure the following programs:

BD-Rebuilder..... The program either crashes without error, or freezes up (Have to exit with a Ctrl-Alt-Del), or runs forever to process a simple 6gb VC-1 file. (My last attempt with this program ran for over 72 hours!) I tried several movies, including the Torchwood Interlaced VC-1 as well.

DGVC1DecNV..... As nice as this program sounds. I don't have a Nvidia card that this will work with. :( As far as I read from the documentation it needed a NVidia card for it to work. Am I wrong? Did I misunderstand something?

MakeMKV... I could be missing something, and IF I am please tell me what I am missing. I have searched but haven't found out how. But I ran this on 3 different VC-1 movies and Torchwood & it never converted the VC-1 video track. If it can convert I haven't figured out or been able to find out how.

VC12AVI... Seems to do a good job converting the VC-1 video. IT has NOT been able to convert the Torchwood Interlaced VC-1 video though. The AVI's play, but the video is extremely "Corrupted" and unwatchable. I tried this program with "Two Lovers" and the avi's played perfectly. However I haven't found a good program to then put these AVI's back into one file & encode them as H.264 or MPG2. The program I was using Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 seemed to work. However the end result always produced "Choppy & Stuttering" video. I suspect Corel as the AVI's played just fine.

So I am open for suggestion on a program to put the AVI's back together again and encode as H.264.

Handbrake.... It crashed when trying to process the Torchwood episodes (Interlaced VC-1). However it processed "Two Lovers" with the only problem in that it removed the top & bottom "Black Bars" and thus stretched the video so it looked weird. I am sure I can find the option to somehow correct that issue. Other than that, it seemed to work just find with NON-interlaced VC-1. Handbrake though only be used to convert the video as it issues with the Audio that don't meet my requirements, or at least as far as I can tell from what I can find on how to use the program.

AVISynth, FDShow, & Hali media splitter all have been installed.

multiAVCHD.... I haven't had it more than about 12 hours allready. Even though I have read the documentation a few times. I know I am still missing something or don't understand something. I have tried several movies, including "Two Lovers" and "Torchwood" and everytime it has created either a AVCHD or Blu-ray folder with a VC-1 encoded M2TS file.

I am still working with this last program so I haven't given up on it yet, as I am still in the learning curve.

My main questions that I am still researching the documentation on. Are:
1. How to downconvert DTS-HD to DTS and not AC3.
2. How to get it to create either just a MKV or M2TS file without the entire AVCHD/Blu-ray folder structure.
3. How to get it to convert the VC-1 to H.264. This is the most important one as I can work around the audio issue with other programs & I can always delete the folder structure and make my own MKV out of the M2TS file using another program.

I do get this error message sometimes when I click on the "Transcode" button that says "Transcode may not work if you see this message". Looking up that issue... but haven't found anything yet... I am still looking.

The system being used for Video Processing, has a 10k WD Raptor drive in it (300gb), 32ghz Duo 2 Quad Core Proccessor, 8gb ram, 32gb readyboost, ATI video card, & is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

The log on "multiAVCHD" when trying to process a Torchwood Episode gives the following log:

Encoding Pas One - content .....
Speed P1 : 1705.7 fps
Encoding : Pass 2
Cannont detect File size
Speed P2: 1713.45 fps
Speed : 854.78 fps overall
Cannont detect file size
Transcoding failed
Check ffdshow/avisynth/halli

After getting that message a few times. I uninstalled and resintalled FFdshow/avisynth and Haali. I still get the same message and all I end up getting is a avchd folder with a VC-1 encoded M2TS file.

What am I missing?

Make sure you have the latest build (715). multiAVCHD should retry when it fails with directshow and try with ffms2.dll. Or go to Settings tab and check [x] Use ffms2 instead of directshow.

About DTS-HD - click your title in media tab and click "EDIT", then select the audio track with DTS-HD audio and click [x] Core only and you're done.
If you set MEDIA SPLIT settin in AUTHOR tab to 0 (or 99999) you will get a M2TS file inside the AVCHD structure, which you can later use without keeping all folders/files.

FFMS failed on your source, AGAIN because it is interlaced VC-1 and anything based on ffmpeg will not handle it. You MUST use WMVideo Decoder DMO (either raw or through setting ffdshow VC1 to "WMV9" instead of "disabled"; libavcodec won't work) if you're not going to pay for/use neuron2's DGxNV tool.

I would be more than happy to use the DFxNV tool, but as I understand it, it requires a NVidia card? Am I wrong? I don't have a NVidia card.

So I understand correctly. Go into the FFdshow video decoder configuration screen and set VC1 to WMV9? If so, that is what it was allready set too. (Just checked)

What do you mean by using it raw?

So long as you are using DirectShowSource() or DSS2() to frameserve your video, the actual DirectShow decoder must be WMVideo DMO, either on its own with no intervention or enabled through ffdshow as described above. You CANNOT USE FFMS to frameserve separately AND YOU CANNOT USE LIBAVCODEC TO DECODE IN DIRECTSHOW because they are both built from ffmpeg code and can't handle interlaced VC-1. If, for some reason, you don't have that decoder installed: because you're using a server edition of Windows or one stripped with N-lite - you're out of luck. So yes, if you've installed everything correctly and you're system isn't otherwise messed up, you can set ffdshow VC-1 decoding to WMV9 (making sure to DISABLE ALL OTHER FFDSHOW IMAGE PROCESSING FILTERS) and then M-AVCHD should be able to use DShow just fine.

This has been covered a thousand times. Do not ask this type of question again without doing 30 minutes of your own research first, because frankly it wears on everyone's patience.

Ok... Using a retail release version Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I clicked on "Video decoder Configuration" and it has WMV9 listed next to VC-1 in the "codecs" section.

How do I know if I am using DirectShowSource() or DSS2() to frameserve my video? Is that a setting in "multiAVCHD" or is that a setting the "Video decoder configuration"

I am guessing here.. but uner the option "DirectShow Control" there is a box for "use ffdshow only in:" then a list a programs. That box is "checked" and "multiAVCHD" is listed.

In "multiAVCHD" in the settings tab. Dan had me check mark "useFFms2 instead of DirectShow". Should I leave that as-is, or go back to unchecking it?

Also how do I know it's actually using the WMVideo DMO? Is that a DLL somewhere on my computer?

P.S.... I missed the part about disabling all other FFDSHOW image processing filters... I am assuming that is the same window as where I told VC-1 to use WMV9.... Disable all the others that say libavcodec etc?

UPDATE.....
On a different computer system. I downloaded and installed BD-Rebuilder v.031.01 beta. I also installed the required avisynth, Halla Splitter, and FFdshow as well. On this sytem it did NOT crash, or "hang". Woo hoo! :) However... it did NOT convert the VC-1 video track. It just created another backup of what I allready had in the first place. (Another M2TS file with the VC-1 video, AC3 audio, and Subtitle tracks).

Under settings I have the following checked....
Encoder: x264 Encoder
Encoder Settings: Normal Priority and Highest
Options: Target Size BD-25

Under Setup:
Check mark for English on both Audio and subtitle languages to keep.
Check mark for limit to one track for each language and subtitle.

General Encoding Options. The only check mark is for "Remove Workfiles after rebuild"
Vidoe Encoding Options: No Items checked
Audio Encoding Options checked: "Do not convert DTS to AC3", "Do Not reencode AC3", & "Keep HD Audio for BD25 encoding"
custom target size is: 49550

Under Mode... "Movie Only Backup" & "Quicker Encoder for Extras" is checked

This is what is currently in the config file:

[Options]
MODE=1
PRIORITY_CLASS=0
ENCODE_QUALITY=3
TARGET_SIZE=23000
AUDIO_TO_KEEP=eng;
SUBS_TO_KEEP=eng;
SD_CONVERT=0
COLOR_BOOST=0
RESIZE_1080=0
DTS_REENCODE=0
AC3_REENCODE=0
AC3_640=1
KEEP_HD_AUDIO=1
AVCHD=0
REMOVE_WORKFILES=1
AUDIO_TRACK_LIMIT=1
SUBTITLE_TRACK_LIMIT=1
CUSTOM_TARGET_SIZE=49550

On multiAVCHD.... I tried it again just like I thought you explained. Unless I misunderstood something. This time it finished and DID create a H.264 file of the correct length. However when I played it back.. it was 58 min of nothing but a HD Nuetral GRAY screen! With the correct audio going on. But nothing on video except for a Gray screen.

UPDATE.... I figured out what I was missing.... "Force_Encode=1" to force it to encode. But it has been processing for over 2 days now. According to the ETA there is still another 28 hours left. Is this normal? I realize it is running on a slow computer. But I can't beleive it should be this slow????
